💜 Thank You💜

A massive thank you to all our Service Users and their families for the lovely gifts they have been dropping in over Christmas. It's lovely to show your appreciation to our wonderful Carers and they are all very grateful, thank you.

💝We put a lot of the gifts into our Carers Christmas raffle that was held during our Christmas lunch. This helped us raise over £250.00 for charity and was really good fun!

We have also kept some boxes of chocolates and biscuits back for our Carers meetings at the end of the month, so everyone can keep health until then. 😂

💜Age is just a number!💜

We hear this saying quite a lot throughout life, and as a community-based care company we see differences in age- and age-related illnesses, but is this because of your age?

I think we could all agree that as the human body ages it can make it more difficult to complete tasks that were once 2nd nature. However, what we hear often from our Service Users is that they don’t feel old in their mind.
Yes, when they look in the mirror, they may have a few more wrinkles than that of their 24-year-old self and thin grey hair where there was once long thick black hair, but inside they don’t feel that much different.

🗯When I was out providing community care I heard this all the time from my Service users, but never really took the time to think what that means for them and the frustration it must cause.

😄Joan our founder tells us a funny story that sums this up perfectly. She was out attending a regular Service in the early days of business and had a new Carer shadowing her. Joan did the usual preparation before entering the home with the new carer explaining what is required any conditions etc and then proceeded into the home. She introduced the new Carer to the Service user on arrival, to which the Carer said in a baby-like voice very slowly ‘and how are you my dear, my name is ***** and I’m here to help you’. The Service User instantly turns to Joan and says ‘Who’s this idiot and why is she talking to me like a baby’? After Joan and the Service user stop laughing she had to explain to the new Carer, just because we are here to help Service users doesn’t mean that we need to talk to them as if they are a baby! Luckily this Service user had a great sense of humour and so did the new Carer. However, you could see how quickly you could offend someone just because you have associated an age with in-ability.

I mention the age 24 earlier for a reason, this is the age I still feel in my mind and I don’t know why. Yes, I am now 13 years older and have more life experience to that of my 24-year-old self, but I still feel like I am in my early twenties, despite the grey hairs my daughter keeps pointing out!

📏Why is this, is age just a measuring tool and what are we really measuring? When I gauge someone’s age what answer am I really looking for? Normally, I am trying to understand their experiences in life and not their physical ability. I guess this really depends on what the conversation is about, If I was looking for a partner to carry something heavy maybe age would be more important, but I know older people much stronger than me!

Being quite an energetic and active person myself, I feel when I get to the stage in life when getting up to go to the kitchen becomes an effort or in fact un-able to get up at all, I will struggle immensely mentally. I imagine this would become a daily taunt with yourself and knowing that this is likely to only continue getting worse must be very depressing. This coupled with possibly being alone with not much stimulation, I can really appreciate that providing care to our vulnerable group isn’t just about daily tasks but more about relationships, an ear to listen and a voice to laugh with!

🌻Luckily in our experience, I see our Services users and Family members remain extremely positive with age and ‘roll with the punches’ after all what other choice do we all have. I always remember what my Grand father used to say, just because my body can’t keep up doesn’t mean my mind feels the same.
Yes, illnesses can come to us all, some more common in later life and others at any point but is age about how you feel mentally or the carbon date of the body in which your mind lives?

🙏I think as the human body ages, it’s important to worry less about the number, and focus more on how you are feeling, what makes us happy and what are we looking forward towards.

So, is age just a number after all or is it a mindset?

What we can do, is treat everyone how we want to be treated and remember to enjoy life in the moment.

💜Appreciation Post!💜

💜"glowing report and all 'strongly agrees' which truly reflect the excellent service you and your team provide"💜

We want to share the above quote with our amazing care teams. This was sent to us from a Social Worker regarding Service Users we support in West Dunbartonshire.

🙏It is lovely to share this feedback with our teams as a lot of our support goes on behind closed doors, but the care, dedication and support our Carers, Support workers, and Management teams give our service users is so important for them to remain at home with a quality of life!

💜Thank you!
