There’s a meme doing the rounds showing a 92 year old woman scaling a 7 foot gate to escape a nursing home. You’ve probably seen it, it’s a few years old. The lady reportedly suffered from dementia, so you can’t help but feel concerned. But the overall impression when you see the video is how *easy* she makes it look. There are people half her age who would struggle to do that at all, never mind as quickly… Why are we talking about this? Because strength, and maintaining muscle mass as we get older, is really important. Not (just) so we can climb like Spiderman, but because of the added benefit to our health and wellbeing – including better sleep, more energy and fending off type 2 diabetes. This month we're talking about looking after our hearts, so we're going to ask: When's the last time you had a check up?

If you haven't been looked over in a while, or if you have risk factors for heart disease (family history, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol), it's worth getting things checked out. Prevention is always better than cure.

Our private GP, Dr Joyce Braaksma, offers thorough 30 minute appointments. She can arrange health checks, review your cardiovascular risk factors, and help you make a plan to protect your heart health going forward.

Poor sleep is linked to high blood pressure, obesity, and increased risk of heart disease. And yet a lot of us (we’d guess, most of us) are running on far less sleep than we need.

If you're consistently struggling with sleep, it's worth getting to the bottom of why. Is it stress? Pain? Sleep apnoea? Hormonal changes? There's usually a reason, and there's usually something that can help.

Our mental health practitioners can help with sleep issues related to stress or anxiety. Our physiotherapy team can help with pain that's disrupting your sleep. And if you suspect there might be an underlying medical reason, our private GP can investigate further.

But if it's something as simple as doom-scrolling before bed, try a week of going to bed half an hour earlier without your phone to see the difference in how you feel – that’s definitely something we’ll be doing!
