And after a lovely 2 weeks, our time at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein is now over🥺

We have had the loveliest time here, welcomed by the most friendly people who were always keen to show us around and take us to new places!
From South African Braais, to exploring the local markets, we’ve been lucky enough to experience the it all❤️

The University itself was beautiful, and testing patients in their local clinics and hospitals allowed us to see a huge array of ages/ocular conditions.
We learned from the fellow students, and taught them some of our knowledge along the way too!
It was super interesting to see the similarities and differences in the world of Optometry between both our countries, and my understanding of conditions as a whole has certainly improved.

I’m very sad to be saying goodbye to such a welcoming place, filled with the best people who have made this experience one that was next to none!

The final FINAL leg of the journey starts now, as we head to Capetown for a well deserved little holiday, before heading back to Scotland in a weeks time🥺

Our time here in South Africa has flown by, and I can’t wait to come back and tell you all about it❤️

The lovely Andrea collected her gorgeous new purple toned Face A Face Paris glasses and while she was here decided that one pair wasn’t enough!
So now she is the proud owner of a stunning pair of Theo glasses, still purple but with a red brow for some fun! Two beautiful new additions to Andrea’s eyewear wardrobe 😎

The first week of our journey at UFS Optometry Department is over!

This week has been such a contrast to the train, where we’ve visited various Hospitals and seen how important the role of an Optometrist is within the department.
I’ve sat it on and performed various eye tests, including very young children, those with low vision levels (due to various ocular pathologies) and those with large squints.
We’ve, once again, learned so much and have picked up some new tests which we’ll take back home to improve our own clinical routines!

Aside from the Optometry work, we’ve met the loveliest of people in Bloemfontein!
They’ve been so welcoming, and have very quickly became such amazing friends that we’re very lucky to have!
From tours around the campus, to coffee and lunch dates, they’ve truly been so kind to us all!

We’re super excited for the weekend plans we have (and no 5:30am alarm!)

Looking forward to sharing the next week and a bit with you all, before we head back home🥺

The last 2 weeks have been one of the best experiences of my life!

From the very first test, to the very last test, everyday has taught me something new.
Meeting all my patients and helping provide them with the best eyecare possible has been nothing short of an honour.

We’ve enhanced our communication skills, our optometry skills and most importantly our empathy for each person that walks through the door.

Some days have been challenging, and some moments have definitely been a test of our strength - but I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. All in, this experience has allowed me to grow in ways I didn’t think were possible.

This experience has made me realise how lucky we are, to have a healthcare service right at our door - and has given me a new perspective of the world around us.
Volunteering in South Africa is something I will recommend to anyone for the rest of my life❤️

Around 80 eye tests, 130 pairs of glasses prescribed and many vital Eyecare referrals later, I feel much more equipped to deal with what may come my way in my future career!

These patients will always hold a special place in my heart, and the genuine appreciation they have is next to none. I’m so happy to have made a difference, and give something back to those who need it most.

But for now, it’s goodbye to the Phelophepa Eye Clinic. Thank you for the memories, the laughs, the skills and the friends for life you’ve given me!

Today marks the 1st day of our 5 week trip to South Africa!

Thank you all so much for all your donations and shares to help make this trip possible🥺❤️

Feeling very grateful to have this opportunity, and as much as there’s definitely been some nerves today I know this trip will provide something so important and special to all the patients we see!
I’m looking forward to making a difference, and enhancing the eyecare services in South Africa - providing something that would otherwise not be easily accessible!

Looking forward to making memories, and building my clinical skills whilst out there and, of course, sharing parts of our trip along the way!
