As a 41-year-old who has recently been diagnosed as perimenopausal, I am learning that it’s not just one thing but a combination of things that’s helping me manage what feels like an endless list of symptoms!

Yes, I’ve chosen HRT because personally I feel that’s the right decision for me, but that’s just one piece of a larger puzzle. I am taking a holistic approach to my menopause because I believe that supporting the body and mind in any way I can is going to be much more effective than relying solely on medication.

October is Menopause Awareness Month, and this year the International Menopause Society is shining a light on “Lifestyle Medicine.” Their 2025 White Paper highlights growing research that supports using lifestyle medicine as a way to ease symptoms, lower the risk of chronic illnesses, and boost overall quality of life.

So, what does a lifestyle medicine approach look like? It focuses on six key areas:

🧠 Mental wellbeing

Stress can intensify symptoms and impact how we feel day to day. Mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and stress management can help lesson symptoms and improve resilience. Many women find comfort and support through therapies like massage, acupuncture, and reflexology—gentle ways to feel more grounded during what can be a really challenging phase.
