Posted • .nutrition.centre The thyroid is a small gland, shaped like a butterfly, situated in the throat area, right in front of the windpipe. It produces the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 which play an essential role in regulating many functions throughout the body, including temperature control, heart rate and even our fertility. ❤️️

Thyroid dysfunction can affect both male 👨and female 👩 fertility making it difficult to conceive. In females, it can lead to disruption of the menstrual cycle and lack of ovulation (anovulation) and in males, it can result in low s***m count, poor semen quality, erectile dysfunction and reduction in libido.

This can happen whether the thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism).

If your thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism) and you have an excess of T3 and T4 this will speed up metabolic functions in the body, raising temperature, speeding up your heart rate and burning energy more quickly, often resulting in:

👉 Weight loss, excessive sweating, sleep disruption, palpitations, anovulation, anxiety or irritability, the appearance of goitre (swelling in the neck caused by an enlarged thyroid), increased risk of miscarriage.

If your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) and you have levels of T3 and T4 that are too low this will result in the opposite – everything is slowed down potentially leading to:

👉 Fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, sensitivity to cold, constipation, low mood, heavy or irregular periods, anovulation, muscle & joint aches, dry skin, increased risk of miscarriage.

Have you been experiencing these symptoms? If so, we would recommend talking to one of our experts to see how can they support you.❤️️

Have you undergone successful IVF treatment whilst working with a nutritional therapist?

Had you previously experienced a failed cycle before deciding to work with a nutritional therapist?

Is your child 9 months or older?

If so, you may be eligible to take part in a research study that I am undertaking as part of my top up BSc degree course at

As part of the study you will take part in a one hour, online interview where you will be asked questions about your experience of going through IVF with nutritional therapy support.

You will be provided with detailed information in relation to confidentiality and a list of questions prior to your interview.

Your contribution will help towards developing a deeper understanding of the fertility focused nutritional therapy experience and the needs of women undergoing IVF.

If you would like to share your experience I would love to hear from you!

Fellow nutritional therapists - if you think this could be relevant to anyone you know please feel free to share!

Delicious breakfast I cobbled together from a couple of recipes from and I was excited to have my first rhubarb of the season (bit late I know!) The tangy compote brings some fruit to your breakfast and really cuts through the rich, warming porridge. The h**p seeds add protein and fibre to help balance blood sugar amongst many other benefits.

Recipe below:

Cinnamon & Cardamom Spiced Porridge with Pistachios and Rhubarb & Orange Compote

For the compote (makes 3 servings):

3 small sticks of rhubarb
Zest and juice of 1 orange
1 tbsp of maple syrup (optional)

Method:

Chop the rhubarb into 1cm pieces

Heat in a saucepan with the orange juice and zest and the maple syrup if using

Simmer until everything has softened down and come together - around 15 minutes

For the porridge (serves 1):

35g organic gluten free oats
20g shelled h**p seeds
250ml dairy free milk
10 pistachios
1 cinnamon stick
Pinch of cardamom powder

Method:
Toast the oats, h**p seeds and pistachios in a saucepan over a low heat for a minute or so then add the milk

Stir well and add the cinnamon stick and cardamom

Continue stirring occasionally for 5-10 minutes adding more milk as you go, if needed

Remove the cinnamon stick and serve with a dollop of compote and a couple of extra pistachios

Sunday smoothie bowl - a little bit sweet to have every day but delicious at the weekend! Inspired by the gorgeous breakfasts I had on my recent stay in Ibiza, this one was made with kale, banana, pineapple, coconut milk and flaxseeds with a dash of supergreen powder. Topped with chia seeds, coconut chips and frozen rasps. Very satisfying and full of goodness!! And all served in my coconut bowl. What are you having for breakfast this morning?

The sun is setting on my week's stay in Ibiza. As I sit on the plane waiting to take off I am so thankful to Healthy Mays and Scarlett for looking after us so well during the Soul Shine retreat. I am also super grateful to have met such a wonderful group of fellow retreaters (not sure if that is a real word!) I have made friends for life I am sure. We were treated to amazing, gut friendly meals prepared by , yoga three times per day, paddleboard yoga, beach time and a cacao ceremony and sound healing as well as generally enjoying each others company and laughing lots. It really reminded me how important it is to take time to reset and refresh - especially after the strange and stressful year we have all been going through! Sadly being on retreat forever is not an option right now but I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone over Zoom for virtual yoga classes. Wishing you all a happy Sunday evening!

Breakfast. The most important meal of the day? For some it is - for others not necessarily. Some might not be able to function without food first thing whilst others might not feel hungry until much later. It's important to remember that one size does not fit all when it comes to nutrition - listen to your body and do what's best for you. Whatever you choose make sure your first meal of the day contains a source of protein (eggs are great!) and maybe even some veg!! This lovely recipe is courtesy of Madeleine Shaw one of my favourite food writers - rocket, tomatoes and avocado topped with eggs, pumpkin seeds and some delicious homemade pesto. Happy Monday!

Hello and welcome to the Jennifer Ellen Nutrition page!

Many of you know me already but for those of you who don’t, here’s a little background info:

I’m Jen, I’ve lived in lots of different places and I’ve met lots of wonderful, interesting people along the way. I love food, cooking and experimenting with new recipes (I have a huge cookbook collection as some of you know!) and I've always had some element of interest in the way that diet can benefit health.

When I moved to London in 2014 I started to seriously consider a career in nutrition and, after three years of study at the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM), I qualified as a nutritional therapist in 2018.

I work mainly with women experiencing hormonal issues, from the onset of puberty right through to menopause. I also support couples with preconception planning, fertility and IVF preparation.

Through my own experiences I know that dealing with these problems alone can be really overwhelming, especially with the huge amount of conflicting information now available online.

One thing I love about nutritional therapy is the “health detective” work that I do to find the root causes of a client’s issues. This allows me to create a fully personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan for each person which can make a hugely positive impact.

Due to COVID restrictions most of my consultations are currently taking place online over Zoom which has worked out really well so far. Face to face appointments are available in Blackheath, London. I hope to be in a position to offer monthly slots in Glasgow once things are a little back to normal!

My website will be up and running in a matter of weeks and I’m really excited to share it! If you’d like to find out more in the meantime please message me and I can send you an information pack.

I’m planning to post bits and pieces of useful nutrition and lifestyle info on the page so let me know if there’s anything specific that you’d like to learn more about – this goes for the men as well – I’ve done quite a bit of research recently on male hormonal issues and I’m happy to share!

Thanks again for supporting me,

Jen x
