Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are still the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, even after 30 years, we are still using the standard ‘routine’ lipid profile for testing patients. Research indicates that the current markers do not provide a comprehensive picture of the patient’s lipid and cardiovascular health. This could hinder the ability to assess and detect risk earlier, as many CVD patients have traditional lipid levels within the recommended range, presenting a need for additional lipid biomarkers.
Traditional lipid panels with optimal levels do not provide a comprehensive view of all risks. It is important to consider other markers such as Lp(a), APO B, and sdLDL to assess patient risk, as they offer more specific insights, especially in patients with complex lipid disorders, strong family histories, or unexplained cardiovascular disease (CVD) and can proactively help detect risk in patients who might be considered low or intermediate risk otherwise.
