History made with the first junior wheelchair grand slam event at 2022.

Congratulations to our boys singles winner and to our boys doubles champions Ben and ๐Ÿฅ‡. Also to our girls double runner up .ubybishop ๐Ÿฅˆ

Well done to and for your performances.

An awesome effort from you all and it was a joy to be your physio.

Not a bad start to hopefully the first of many junior grand slams for coach .mccarroll!

Congratulations to Ruby on winning the girls singles ๐Ÿ† and Josh for being runner up in the boys singles.

โ• Post natal rehab part 2 โ•

Next up is a Pilates exercises, knee drops. The top video shows good trunk and pelvis control, you can see the trunk position is maintained, the ribs arenโ€™t flaring up to compensate and the pelvis isnโ€™t twisting to control the legs ๐Ÿฆต.

The bottom video is an emphasised version of where control can be compromised. It gives you and idea of what movement patterns can occur when the the smaller muscles groups arenโ€™t working as well as they could be (pelvis twists to control the movement, back arches and ribs flare upwards).

If a client canโ€™t control the trunk with smaller movements like this then I donโ€™t progress onto higher demand exercise (heavier weights, more explosive exercise etc.) until they can as it may be excess strain on the trunk and pelvic floor.

To compliment my recent blog on post natal MSK recovery โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน, coming up is a series of some early stage exercises I incorporate into rehab programs when I work with post natal clients.

I always make sure the basics are done well before progressing onto the higher impact work. That said I wouldnโ€™t give these exercises on their own, i'd encourage clients to build it into a gentle exercise program (where you apply the principles of trunk and pelvis control to exercises such as squats and steps ups)

First up is a very simple pelvic tilt. Activates the smaller muscles groups around the lower back and the pelvis and improves proprioception of the joints in this region.

Itโ€™s a good building block for working on trunk strengthening and is a nice way to introduce some gentle pelvic floor and core activation.

๐Ÿ”น Exercise challenge of the week: Single legged, body weight Romanian deadlifts (RDLs)๐Ÿ”น

How many can you do on each leg without putting the opposite foot down?

Tight hamstrings? Strengthen and lengthen
donโ€™t just stretch! A great exercise to work the hamstrings eccentrically and an easy one to adjust depending on your ability. It also works on ankle proprioception and control (hence my initial wobble)!

If struggling on one leg then start on two. You can also load up the heavy weights on two legs to work on hamstring and glute strength. ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ.

Keep your lower back straight and hinge from the hips. Soft knees throughout.

A great bolt on to any workout and all you need is a rope.

Not only is it great for general โค๏ธ and ๐Ÿซ health but you can build it into rehab and recovery programs to introduce plyometric work, footwork drills and speed work.

Tailor the pace to work for you and if using as part of injury or pathology rehab, check with your specialist first as not all soft tissues is ready to be loaded up straight away โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน(tendons I am looking at you!)

Plus 200 calories for 10 minutes ๐Ÿ’ฅ! For example, today I stuck x 10 reps of 30 seconds on 30 seconds off on the end of my HIIT

A common injury in many sports that require sudden change of speed and direction ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

Prevention is always better than cure so if you are in a sport prone to injury Iโ€™d recommend building in multi plane hamstring prehab (work on strength, length, explosive absolute and agility)! ๐Ÿฉน
