Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common type of heart rhythm disorder in the UK, affecting around 1.5 million people. It causes the upper chambers of the heart to beat irregularly, which can disrupt blood flow and increase the risk of stroke and heart failure if left untreated.
You might not even notice any symptoms – which is why it often goes undiagnosed until complications arise. In fact, the lifetime risk of developing AFib is estimated to be 1 in 4.
The most effective way to detect an irregular heart rhythm is through an electrocardiogram (ECG). At The Maxwell Practice, we include an ECG as part of all our routine health screens.
