*disclaimer - this is a very big and complex subject, I'm not sure why I thought it would be a good idea to try and address it with a 3min post! This doesn't even scratch the surface... the intention is purely to give a v brief and high level idea in case you want to investigate more!
Pain is created in your brain 100% of the time.
This does NOT mean it's 'in your head' or imaginary, or any less real.
It just means that your brain is what takes on board all of the information available to it from all sources of information and decides whether or not to create pain in response to certain stimuli.
This stimuli includes:
- info from your senses
- info from your memory (both conscious AND subconscious)
- info from your current state, I.e your mood, your feelings, your emotions
The brain pieces this information to decide whether or not pain is required so that it can protect you and encourage you to remove yourself from the situation, i.e hand out of the fire!
If, as an example, your back 'goes into spasm' because you picked up a washing basket, or a banana (this happened to me once!), or because you bent down, this is likely to be an indicator of there being a lot more going on...
What are your stress levels like right now? Honestly!
What is p1ssing you off right now?
Are you fearful about something? Unhappy with the direction life is taking? Feeling stuck? Holding onto things that have happened to you in life?
Sometimes just spending a little time thinking about these things can be really helpful, note them down maybe, show your mind and body rhat you care enough to sit ans give it some time, trust what comes up, your body and mind already know the answers, you just might not consciously be aware and accepting off them right now.
Anyway, musings over!
If you want to know more about the complexities of Chroni pain I recommend the following books...
