🌱 Back pain after gardening? You’re not alone. 🌿
With the weather warming up, many of us are getting stuck into weeding, digging, and planting — and for some, that also means aching backs or pain that flares up after a day outside.
Here are a few quick tips to protect your back and stay moving:
✅ Don’t power through. Take breaks every 20–30 minutes, especially if you’re doing repetitive tasks like bending, raking, or digging. A few minutes standing up and walking can reset your posture and reduce strain.
✅ Switch sides. Try to alternate which hand or side you use for tasks — most of us have a “go-to” side that takes all the load!
✅ Use support. A knee pad or low stool can help reduce the need to crouch or round your spine for long periods.
✅ Don’t stretch cold. If your back feels tight after gardening, gentle movement (not static stretching) is best — walking, pelvic tilts, or lying on your back with knees bent can ease tension.
✅ Listen to your body. A bit of post-gardening stiffness is normal, but sharp pain, tingling, or pain that lingers for days may need support.
If back or joint pain is stopping you from doing what you love — whether it’s gardening or just everyday life — feel free to message me. I’m always happy to offer advice or guidance, no pressure at all.

What to Expect When You Visit!
Thinking about seeing a chiropractor but not sure what to expect?
At my clinic, it’s not ever about “clicks and cracks” and hearing one is a rarity!! (I’ll explain more about that in a later post!)
Here’s what your first session looks like:
🔹 A calm, thorough chat about your pain, health, and life
🔹 Gentle assessments and treatments — we look together at how your body moves and what your nervous system is telling you!
🔹 You’ll learn something helpful from day one.
🔹 Care that includes movement, stress regulation, and tailored support.
My goal? That you leave feeling more in control, not more confused.

🌟 Struggling with Knee Osteoarthritis? Here's What the Evidence Says You Can Do to Help Yourself🌟
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of ongoing knee pain, especially as we get older — but the good news is that there’s a lot you can do to support your joints and improve how you feel.
Here’s what research shows really helps:
✅ Keep Moving (Even When It Feels Counterintuitive!)
It’s natural to want to rest when you’re in pain, but regular, gentle movement helps reduce stiffness and improve joint health. Activities like walking, cycling, or swimming are ideal.
✅ Strengthen the Muscles That Support the Knee
Strong thigh, hip, and glute muscles help support the knee and reduce pressure on the joint. Simple strength exercises, done regularly, can reduce pain and improve movement.
✅ Manage Weight if Needed
Even small changes in body weight can reduce the load on your knees and ease symptoms. It’s not about dieting — it’s about supporting your joints through lifestyle.
✅ Scans Don’t Tell the Whole Story
Many people have changes on imaging (like X-rays) but no pain — and some have pain without major changes on scans. What matters most is your function and how you're coping day-to-day.
✅ Use Pain Relief Strategically
Topical anti-inflammatories or occasional medications can help you stay active — but they’re not a long-term fix. Movement and self-management are key.
✅ Mind the Pain-Mind Connection
Pain is influenced by many things — including stress, sleep, activity levels, and even how we think about pain. Learning more about how pain works can make it feel less threatening and give you back some control.

🧠 Let’s Talk About Sciatica – What It Is (and Isn’t)
“Sciatica” is a term that gets used a lot — but often not quite accurately.
True sciatica refers to lower back pain with radiculopathy — meaning pain caused by irritation or compression of one or more spinal nerve roots. This typically leads to pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that travels from the lower back down into the leg, often in a clear pattern.
✅ Common features of true sciatica (lumbar radiculopathy):
•Pain, tingling, or numbness radiating into the leg
•Muscle weakness in a specific pattern
•Symptoms often follow a nerve root distribution
However, not all leg pain from the back is sciatica.
You can have referred pain from joints, discs, or muscles in the lower back that travels into the buttock or thigh — without direct nerve root involvement. This is common and usually settles well with the right approach.
Even with true sciatica, the symptoms aren’t always due to something being "trapped" or seriously wrong. Often, it’s about increased sensitivity in the nerve — which can happen when the nerve is irritated or under stress. This sensitivity can be influenced by things like inflammation, reduced movement, or even how the nervous system is processing signals at the time.
The good news is: nerves are resilient and can settle down with the right approach. Pain doesn’t always mean harm, and recovery is absolutely possible — even if it’s been around a while.
🔍 Getting a clear understanding of what’s causing your symptoms is an important first step — and it can often bring a sense of relief on its own.
If you’re dealing with pain down the leg and wondering whether it’s “sciatica” or something else, you’re not alone. The key is understanding what’s going on — and working with the body to support recovery.

It's easy to panic when we first experience some sort of pain particularly back pain, acute non specific low back pain is really common and normally settles within a few days.
There are things we can do ourselves to help ourselves to reduce the pain intensity, duration and help us get back to the things we love. Even if we do need some extra help from a healthcare professional, doing these things first also help us to help you.
Check out the self help page on my website for more advice and support.
