Ooh, it's Breathwork's 20th birthday! I'm so pleased I chose to train as a Mindfulness teacher with them.... Here's a neat artwork (by Alison Soye) of their milestones.... my how they've grown! Jess x

We thought it would be wonderful to bring Breathworks' journey across the last 20 years to life, so we enlisted the help of talented London-based illustrator Alison Soye. We are excited to share her creation here!

This timeline of milestones maps our beginnings, from Breathworks Co-founder Vidyamala Burch first ever course with small group of people, to where we are today and our ever-expanding global community. Can you spot any familiar faces?

Breathworks Across 2️⃣0️⃣ Years 🎉
1985: Vidyamala discovers mindfulness and meditates for the first time in hospital.
2001: The first Mindfulness-based Pain Management course is taught.
2004: Breathworks is founded with a small team of volunteers and a pile of business start-up books.
2005: Teacher Training Course is launched, spreading life-changing programmes further around the world.
2010 (to 2021): Breathworks contributes to significant research in pain management, publishing 14 studies, presenting at scientific conferences and partnering with the NHS, UCL and more.
2014: 'Mindfulness for Health' is awarded first prize in Popular Medicine in the British Medical Association Books Awards.
2021: Breathworks community expands around the world with the help of our Community of Practice; reaching over 100,000 people (and growing) with courses and trainings.

Thank you to everyone who is part of this journey, we are looking forward to adding more milestones with you! See more of what we're up to at: https://www.breathworks-mindfulness.org.uk

Which quick tips work best for you when you're anxious? Personally I like to feel my feet on the ground, take a few deeper breaths and use my eyes and ears to connect with the world around me, reminding me I'm safe right now. When things are more intense I activate the vagus nerve by making a deep 'voooo' sound. Worth a try in the privacy of your own home! Happy Friday! Jess x

Quick Tips for Managing Anxiety

1. Breathe out for longer than you breathe in. Do this for a minute to steady the breath.
2. Feel your feet on the ground. This exercise helps you to feel more anchored and safe in the moment.
3. Hug yourself. Human touch can produce oxytocin for comfort. Wrap your arms around you, close your eyes and breathe.
4. Blow some bubbles. Breathing through pursed lips stimulates the body’s ‘rest and digest’ setting which counters the ‘fight or flight’ response.
5. Humming. This stimulates the vagus nerve and helps to slow down the out-breath.
6. Stroke something soft. If you have a pet, let them soothe you!
