Struggling to switch your mind off at night?
With World Sleep Day coming up on Friday, 13 March, it’s a good time to think about how important sleep is for our mental wellbeing.
In Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy, I often talk about the brain’s “emotional stress bucket.” During the day, this bucket gradually fills with everyday worries, pressures and responsibilities. One of the main ways the brain processes and releases that stress is during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep – the stage when we dream.
When sleep is disrupted or shallow, the stress bucket may not empty properly, leaving us feeling more anxious, overwhelmed, or mentally tired the next day.
Here are three simple things that may help improve sleep quality:
• Allow time to wind down – give yourself 20–30 minutes in the evening to relax before going to bed.
• Reduce screen use before bed – phones and tablets can keep the brain stimulated when it needs to slow down.
• Keep a regular sleep routine – going to bed and waking up at similar times helps regulate the body’s internal clock.
To mark World Sleep Day, I’ve written a short article explaining how REM sleep helps the brain process stress and why good quality sleep is so important.
