One-to-one human support is at the heart of what we do, so come and meet the family!
Introducing one of our Senior Mentors, Becca Merrell 🌟
What experience do you bring to your role?
I have over 14 years’ experience teaching and supporting learners at school and in further and higher education, with a strong background in psychology. I have both positive and negative personal experiences of education which helps me empathise with challenges, whilst also helping learners to reflect on how their course might benefit them.
What do you enjoy the most about your work?
I absolutely love that we get to know learners in their full context – I’ve always thought holistically about people and their experiences and I believe that having a 360-degree view helps to shape support around what truly matters to them.
What makes you spring out of bed in the morning or makes you smile?
Connecting with people, cold sunny days, and 70/80s disco music!
I am also a practising artist (when I have time) and have had several commissions. I love painting historic or run-down buildings, especially industrial ones. I like the atmosphere they create!
What are you most proud of?
I was lucky enough to complete a master’s degree in psychology when my son was between 9 months and 2 years old. I honestly didn’t know I had it in me, and it was a reminder of the confidence and motivation that education can bring into your life.
What barriers have you overcome?
A big one for me was maths. I loved it as a child but lost all my confidence as a teenager and completely switched off. It was supporting children with additional needs in maths, as a Teaching Assistant, that made me remember what I liked about it. I achieved additional qualifications and then completed my teacher training and taught maths for 7 years! It was a healing experience for me. I don’t teach anymore but run a YouTube channel called Maths With Becca, to help others who find maths difficult:
