Screening: The Soul (2021)

Step into a world of mystery, sci-fi intrigue, and emotional depth with The Soul, a visually stunning Taiwanese-Chinese tech-noir thriller directed by Cheng Wei-hao. Adapted from Jiang Bo’s award-winning novel, this film unpacks the dark consequences of mind-transfer technology in a near-future world.

When a powerful biotech CEO is found murdered, a cancer-stricken prosecutor and his detective wife are drawn into a labyrinth of memory manipulation, occult experimentations, and unsettling moral ambiguity. Twists pile upon twists, blurring the lines between reality, identity, and rebirth.

Adding to its acclaim, the film earned Best Actor for Chang Chen and several technical awards at the 58th Golden Horse Film Awards — including Best Editing, Art Direction, and Visual Effects.

Why you shouldn’t miss it:

A brilliantly woven genre-hybrid: sci-fi, mystery, crime, and drama — emotionally gripping and intellectually challenging.

Award-winning performances and haunting cinematography open a window to a moral dilemma that lingers long after the credits roll.

🌴🥥 Happy World Coconut Day! Did you know that the name ‘coconut’ is derived from Portuguese – ‘Coco’. The word coco is used in colloquial speech to refer to the human head in Spanish and Portuguese.

It is believed to be given to the fruit by the sailors of Vasco da Gama, c.1498, because the three indentations on the coconut shell resemble facial features (head / skull) and a mythical creature similar to goblin in Portuguese folklore called ‘Coco’.

In the West it was originally called nux indica, a name used by Marco Polo in 1280 while in Sumatra. He took the term from the Arabs, who called it jawz hindī, translating to ‘Indian nut’.

Thengai ‘தேங்காய்’, the Tamil name, was used in the detailed description of ‘coconut’ found in ‘ltinerario’ by Ludovico di Varthema published in 1510 and also in the later Hortus Indicus Malabaricus.

The specific name ‘nucifera’ is Latin for ‘nut-bearing’.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this little trivia on this World Coconut Day! Cheers 🌴🥂🍻🍶😍

South & Southeast Asian Heritage Month @ Neitiv
Friday Film Night: JSA – Joint Security Area (2000)

Dive into one of South Korea’s most powerful and emotionally charged films of the new millennium—JSA: Joint Security Area, directed by Park Chan-wook, the visionary auteur known for Oldboy, The Handmaiden, and Decision to Leave.

Set in the tense no-man’s land of the Korean Demilitarized Zone, JSA begins with a mysterious fatal shooting involving soldiers from both North and South. As a neutral investigator — Major Sophie E. Jean — uncovers fractured truths, what emerges is a deeply moving tale of forbidden friendship, loyalty, and the tragic cost of political division.

A commercial powerhouse upon release, JSA became the highest-grossing film in South Korea at the time and earned Best Film and Best Cinematography at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, as well as sweeping major categories at the Grand Bell Awards including Best Film and Best Actor.

Critics and audiences alike praise JSA for its humane portrayal of soldiers on opposing sides and its anti-war message, exploring how empathy and connection can transcend political realities.
