Happy bank holiday!

It’s a very hot one today!

☀️ Hot Weather Tips ☀️

As temperatures rise, it’s important to take extra care of yourself and those around you during hot weather.

Here are some simple ways to stay safe and well in the heat:

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day
🧴 Wear sunscreen and light, loose-fitting clothing
🏠 Keep your home cool by closing curtains during the hottest part of the day
🍓 Eat light meals and avoid too much alcohol or caffeine
🚶 Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours
👵 Check in on elderly relatives, neighbours, or vulnerable individuals regularly

At Elgar Care, we understand that hot weather can affect older adults and vulnerable people more seriously. Staying hydrated, cool, and connected can make a big difference.

Let’s all take care of ourselves and each other this summer ☀️

Meet the team!

Meet Alexis – Care Manager

Alexis is our Care Manager and has been part of the Elgar Care journey for many years. She first joined us as a carer not long after we opened, before gaining further experience elsewhere and returning as a Client Manager. She has now been back with us for 4 years.

Last year, Alexis moved over to the carer team and has truly flourished in her role. She is a naturally empathic and she is just brilliant at everything she puts her mind too. Just when we think she can't surprise us anymore she really does. She has recently completed her Level 2 in Health and Social Care, continuing to develop her knowledge and skills.

Alexis is a real ray of sunshine within the team. She is incredibly supportive to our care staff and brings a positive energy to the workplace, always brightening the day with her infectious laugh. You will hear her before you see her. Alexis enjoys working with us all at Elgar Care as she enjoys helping all types of people.

What does outstanding care look like to Alexis?

Outstanding care is respectful and person- centred. It is care that is safe, reliable, caring and continuously improving in all aspects. Keeping independence and quality of life as much as they can for as long as possible.
Outside of work Alexis plays netball, enjoys going on the sun-bed, and on the farm with the sheep, calves and highland cows.

One of our wonderful care assistants, Sue, recently showed incredible bravery and professionalism by helping to save the life of their next-door neighbour after they began choking and became unresponsive. Acting quickly and calmly under pressure, Sue was supported by another neighbour, and they worked together and performed CPR until emergency services arrived.

We are extremely proud of her actions, which reflect the compassion, dedication, and lifesaving skills our carers bring not only to their work, but also to their community. Sue's quick thinking made a real difference in a critical situation, and the neighbour went on to make a full recovery. Photo attached of them together.

Well done, Sue; we are beyond proud of you.

She is currently completing a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology, further developing her skills and insight. 🌿 Mental Health Awareness Week 🌿

Mental health affects every one of us. Whether you’re struggling yourself, or supporting someone you love, you are not alone.

It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to ask for help. And it’s okay to talk about it.

This week — and every week — let’s check in on each other. A simple “how are you, really?” can mean the world to someone who’s been suffering in silence.

If you or someone you know needs support, there are people in Herefordshire who care and want to help:

🟢 Herefordshire Mind — 01432 271643
🟢 Andy’s Man Club — Every Monday @ Westfields at 7pm (except bank holidays)
🟢 We are Farming Minds — 0808 8020070
🟢 Young Minds Parents Helpline — 0808 8025544
🟢 Calm — 0800 585858
🟢 Hereford Men’s Mental Health Group — 07376727280

You don’t have to face this alone. Reach out. Talk to someone. Take that first step — it could change everything.

💚 Together we can break the stigma.

If you or someone you’re supporting is in crisis right now, please also consider calling 999 or going to A&E. The Samaritans are available 24/7 on 116 123 (free, any phone).

Mental health is incredibly important to us, being ambassadors for Herefordshire Mind and them being our charity of the year.

Yesterday we attended the Men’s Mental Health Awareness Evening in Hereford — and I left with one thought.

This isn’t just about us. It’s about the boys growing up right now.

Four incredible speakers — Alex Knowles, Ollie Beale, Paul R, and JAMO break the silence — shared stories that were raw, honest, and deeply human.

We are still raising boys in a culture of silence. “Man up.” “Don’t cry.” “Just get on with it.”
And those words — however well intentioned — are costing lives.

Su***de is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. That doesn’t start at 40. It starts in childhood. In classrooms. In playgrounds. In the moments a young boy looks around for permission to be vulnerable — and doesn’t find it.

We have a responsibility. Not just to the men struggling today, but to the next generation of boys watching how we handle it.

If we normalise these conversations now — at home, work in schools, in communities — we change the trajectory for thousands of young lives.

Talk to the boys in your life. Tell them it’s okay to feel. Model it yourself.

The bravest thing a man can do is open up — and the greatest gift we can give a boy is showing him that.
Thank you Alex Knowles, for the football; Ollie Beale for an inspiring evening; and everyone involved. It’s ok to talk!

Our door is open, our kettle is always on and we always have cake or biscuits. Please talk. 💙
