Thank you to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust for our nomination in the 'Working Together Award'.

We’re honoured to have been nominated for an award following our partnership with QEH midwives and Norfolk & Waveney LMNS.

Together, we’ve implemented a digital, evidence-based antenatal education platform, promoted through patient portals and QR codes, supporting choice, confidence and informed decision-making throughout pregnancy, labour and birth — alongside RealBirth face-to-face classes delivered with midwifery teams.

QEH midwives exceeded both their six-month and annual targets ahead of schedule, and families can now access information in nine languages and BSL. In parallel, our face-to-face training has strengthened workforce skills and positively enhanced the local maternity experience.

We’re incredibly grateful to the LMNS for championing this work and proud to partner with teams who share our passion for informed choice and high-quality maternity care.

🌸 Real Birth Story – Alex’s Journey 🌸

Alex accessed RealBirth through their local maternity service and used it as one of several ways to prepare for birth.

They were admitted straight to the antenatal ward and spent around 6 hours there before moving into the room where they gave birth. After consenting to an internal examination, Alex was told they were already 4 cm.

Birth progressed over the next 10 hours, using breathing techniques and gas and air for comfort. Alex gave birth lying down and had a vaginal birth.

After birth, Alex chose to stay on the postnatal ward for a short time to receive breastfeeding support.

They completed the parts of RealBirth that felt most relevant. While it was one of several tools used, Alex shared that using RealBirth helped them feel calmer and more prepared, and that without that preparation her experience would have been harder.

💬 “It was one of the information sources I used, but I felt calmer because I felt prepared. Without that preparation I feel that it would have been harder.”

Alex rated the workshop 6/10 and said they would recommend it to others.

Across the past decade, a series of major national maternity reviews has highlighted what families and professionals have long understood: meaningful, lasting change is needed in how we deliver maternity care in the UK.

Better Births set out a clear vision in 2016 — personalised care, continuity, informed choice and genuine multidisciplinary teamwork. The Ockenden Review in 2022 showed the human cost when systems, culture and escalation processes break down, and called for urgent, systemic reform to protect mothers, babies and staff.

The latest National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation interim report makes it clear that many of those long-standing challenges remain. Women, birthing people and families continue to report unacceptable experiences and variation in care. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has spoken of the “deeply distressing” evidence being gathered and announced a national taskforce to finally drive improvements at scale.

As midwives and educators who support maternity services from the outside, we see both the pressures teams face and the wider patterns affecting families across the UK. Intervention rates in the UK are at their highest levels, yet outcomes are not improving in the way any of us would wish. International comparisons remind us that quality does not come from “more intervention” by default, but from the right intervention at the right time. In countries such as Japan, where maternity systems integrate both midwifery and obstetric care throughout pregnancy, outcomes for physiological birth remain among the strongest globally.

Midwives here in the UK care deeply about providing safe, appropriate care. Yet they often find themselves pulled between clinical guidelines, resource pressures, organisational policy and the individual needs of the people they serve. Many leave feeling demoralised or traumatised, despite giving everything they have each day.

This is not — and should not be — a debate about promoting one mode of birth over another. It is about ensuring that every person is supported into the pathway that genuinely fits their needs: timely medical care when clearly and clinically indicated, and protected physiological care when appropriate. Both matter. Both save lives. Both deserve equal recognition.

At Real Birth, our purpose is to help bridge these gaps. By increasing access to clear, evidence-based antenatal education, supporting personalised decision-making, and helping families feel informed and supported, we strive to strengthen the foundations of safer, kinder maternity care.

We stand with families, midwives, obstetricians and every team working to improve maternity services. This moment in our national conversation is difficult — but it is also an opportunity. An opportunity to listen, to learn, and to recommit to maternity care that is truly responsive, humane and evidence-driven.

“An amazing, easy-to-use course. This has genuinely changed my mindset about labour. I was so anxious about giving birth and now I feel prepared, empowered — and actually excited. I’ve started writing my birth plan with confidence and have proper questions to ask my midwife. I went from dreading it to feeling like I can do this. Thank you so, so much.”

Feedback like this reminds us why The Real Birth Company exists 💛
Evidence-based, inclusive antenatal education that supports families to feel informed, confident and empowered as they prepare for birth.

Last night’s Pitch 2 Tokyo final was such an inspiring experience.
Standing alongside so many talented innovators was an honour in itself — and I’m proud that maternity and women’s health were represented on that stage.

Although we didn’t take home the top spot, I left with something even more important: a room full of people who now understand just how vital antenatal education, equity and maternal safety truly are.

A huge congratulations to Lab, who won with an excellent and beautifully delivered pitch. Their work is impressive, and it was a privilege to share the stage with them and all the finalists.

RealBirth™ will continue championing this mission — in the UK and globally.
Every family deserves informed choice, every midwife deserves support, and every woman deserves to feel safe, respected and in control of her birth.

And something I hope we all remember:
Supporting maternity isn’t just supporting women — it is supporting every child, every family, and every future generation. Improving birth improves society.

Thank you to everyone who cheered us on, encouraged us and believed in what RealBirth™ stands for. Onwards. 💜
