As part of the government and the NHS’s primary care access recovery plan, patients requiring the contraceptive pill can access it through participating pharmacies without a referral from their GP, though they can be referred by their general practice or sexual health clinic. You may find when ordering a repeat prescription through your surgery that they tell you to come to the pharmacy now instead.

Not every pharmacy will be participating just yet, and some may only be able to offer it on certain days when they have a pharmacist on site who has completed the competency training for the service.

We are pleased to say the regular pharmacist at our Westfaling Street branch is well established in offering this service, and you can arrange an appointment with her by calling into their branch or phoning them - see their page for opening times.

The pharmacist will offer a confidential consultation and reach a shared decision with the person about their first supply of the pill, or the ongoing supply of their current oral contraception. The supply of oral contraception will be free.

It is important to note that the service is only available to those who take the pill for contraception purposes and NOT for other reasons such as regulating hormones, cycles, etc. For needs such as these, you will need to speak to tell you're surgery and tell them you are not eligible for the service in pharmacy, and they will need to continue your ongoing care.

We've had a beautiful spring, with lots of sunshine, and whilst we should all try to get out and enjoy it, don't forget to stay safe. 😎

This week is sun awareness week, so we want to highlight the importance of limiting sun damage to your skin.

Top Tips for Sun Safety

1. Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
2. Wear Protective Clothing: Opt for long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection.
3. Seek Shade: Especially during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM), try to stay in the shade as much as possible.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin and body hydrated.
5. Be Mindful of Reflections: Water, sand, and even snow can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure.

Recognising the signs of skin damage

Early-detection of skin damage is crucial. Look out for new or changing moles, unusual skin growths, or any persistent skin issues.

We want everyone to reap the benefits of the sunshine; improving mood and mental health, creating Vitamin D, and generally feeling happy 😃 just make sure you look after your skin too.
