If Your Hip Clicks — Don’t Panic ⬇️
If your hip “clicks” or “cracks” when you move, you’re definitely not alone. Mine has done it for as long as I can remember! It doesn’t hurt, but it still takes me by surprise sometimes.
Here’s the thing — a clicking hip isn’t usually something to worry about if there’s no pain, swelling, or loss of movement following said click. It’s often just your body’s way of saying, “Hey, I’m moving in a slightly tight or misaligned way.”
✨ Common causes of a clicking hip:
• Tight hip flexors (often the case with desk workers)
• A tight IT band rubbing over the hip bone (sounds soooo painful but isn’t always the case!)
• Weak glutes or deep core muscles that don’t stabilize the joint quite as well as they should.
• Sometimes, it’s just the shape of your hip joint or a harmless tendon crossover.
✅ How you can help:
• Add gentle hip mobility work — think hip circles, 90/90 transitions, or controlled leg swings which will help to gently strengthen the muscles surrounding your hips.
• Stretch your hip flexors and glutes regularly- both stretching and strengthening play an important role in this!
• Trying to move around more if you find yourself sat for a long portion of the day- if you can!
If your hip doesn’t hurt, it’s generally fine — just a quirky (and snappy) reminder to keep your hips mobile and strong. But if it ever becomes painful, catches, or swells up, it’s worth getting checked by a physio.
Your body’s little “clicks” are often just cues for better movement — not red flags 🚩
