We now provide services to several hundred people across Herefordshire. Our carers form a close professional relationship with our clients, and when they pass away it can be incredibly upsetting for them. We always ask our staff if we can do anything to help. In this case, because our client had an unattended funeral - due to having no family or Next of Kin, our carers found it hard to find closure, so we arranged for our own memorial service at the office where we had poems, music and shared our memories.

As the nights start to draw in, it is important to understand how this may affect loved ones.

Environmental factors such as light and temperature can affect us all, but especially those living with Dementia. Encourage a stable temperature would also support changes that people experience when the season change; don’t forget it can get chilly when you are just sitting and not moving around very much, which can be the case of many of the people we support.

Other things such as activity, sleep and diet have also been shown to be affected by changes in the seasons for people living with Dementia. It’s similar to many of us without a diagnosis of dementia though, isn’t it? We may find ourselves eating less when it is hot, not being as active in a heat wave and also finding it hard to sleep.

- Maintain the temperature
- Keeping light bright
- Encourage exercise where possible
- Keep routines
