Meet Richie!

Behind every fitting and adjustment is a team effort, and Richie is a big part of making it all happen.

Based in the West Midlands, Richie makes sure every Chunc chair is carefully assembled, serviced, and set up to the highest standard. But it’s not just about the technical side; Richie’s work gives families peace of mind, knowing their child’s chair is safe, supportive, and perfectly tailored for use at home and in clinical settings.

He also works closely with our workshop team, making sure every chair that leaves us is ready to meet the unique needs of the person who’ll be using it.

Last week, our Seating Specialist Charlotte visited Swindon Wheelchair Services to give the team some hands-on training with the Spica, Chunc One, and Adapt chairs.

It was a day full of practical tips, shared experiences, and yes - a well-earned lunch! 🧡

We love seeing teams grow in confidence when working with our chairs, knowing that this helps ensure your child receives the best possible support and comfort every day.

Meet Dylan 🧡

Last week we had the joy of fitting Dylan, a 21-year-old with cerebral palsy, with his brand-new Chunc chair.

Dylan first tried one of our free loan chairs, and after securing private funding, he now has his very own - complete with an activity tray and power assist.

His mum shared a few lovely words about the journey:

"We can’t recommend Chunc enough. From the very first phone call, everyone was so helpful and professional. Rich explained everything clearly, demonstrated the chair perfectly, and stayed in touch throughout. Dylan is now happy, relaxed, and comfortable in his chair. Everything, start to finish, was seamless."

Proper seating means more than just a chair – it’s about comfort, independence, and making everyday life that little bit easier for both the person using the chair and their family.

A marketer on the road! 🚚

This week I swapped my laptop for a van ride, tagging along with our Seating Specialist, Richie, on a home visit and chair set-up. 𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳: 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱.

The day went something like this:

Load the chair into the van (I supervised)

Essential coffee stop (my expertise)

Traffic…lots of traffic

Unload the chair (I watched from a safe distance)

Measurements and adjustments in the customer’s home

The best bit: sitting Dylan in his brand new chair and seeing it fit perfectly! 🧡

It was such a privilege to watch Dylan’s new chair being set up, and to see how much care goes into making sure every detail fits just right.

Back at my desk, I usually write about the impact of our chairs, but experiencing it first hand was a great reminder of why the work matters.

Classroom Seating Tips for Children Who Use Wheelchairs

Seating can have a big impact on your child’s comfort, posture, and ability to participate at school. Here are some common challenges and things to look out for:

1️⃣ Feet Not Supported. Unsupported feet can make it hard for your child to sit securely and comfortably. Adjustable footrests or a footbox can help to enable weight bearing and improve overall stability

2️⃣ Posture & Alignment. Sitting unsupported leads to discomfort and fatigue. Lateral supports, pelvic positioning, and headrests can make a big difference for comfort and alignment.

3️⃣ Limited Movement. Static positioning increases the risks of pressure injury. Children need to be able to shift positions. Tilt or recline features allow movement while maintaining function.

4️⃣ One-Size-Fits-All Seating. Every child is different, and generic chairs fail to address individual needs. Chairs that adjust in depth, height, and support can help your child engage more in class.

5️⃣ Pressure Points. Too much pressure on the hips or thighs can make sitting uncomfortable and limit classroom participation. Proper cushions and seating angles protect your child from discomfort and skin issues.

Small adjustments can make a huge difference to your child’s comfort, posture, and participation at school. Always work with your OT or physiotherapist to ensure the best setup for your child.

Traditional wheelchairs can make school harder for children with complex needs.

School is more than lessons. It’s where children make friends, grow in confidence, and feel part of the group. 🧡

A big thank you to the Children’s Occupational Therapy team at LGI Leeds!

Our Chunc seating specialists, Marc and Kris, had a wonderful time visiting the team earlier this month. They delivered training, shared updates on how we work, and spent time making sure the referral process for families is as smooth and simple as possible.

Ian started his career as a Rehabilitation Engineer, working alongside OTs and PTs to understand the real difference the right equipment can make. Since then, he’s spent many years supporting families and professionals with mobility solutions.

At Chunc, Ian brings a friendly, knowledgeable approach, always taking the time to listen and find what works best for each child and family. 🧡

Choosing the right wheelchair for your child can feel like a big task, especially when it comes to funding. The good news is that there are several different routes to explore, depending on your child’s needs and your family’s situation.

Here are some of the main options:

🧡 NHS Wheelchair Services - Your local NHS team can provide an assessment and supply a wheelchair, though choices may sometimes feel limited.

🧡 Personal Wheelchair Budgets (PWBs) - These are available in many areas and give families more flexibility. They allow you to “top up” NHS provision with personal funds or other support to access a chair that better suits your child.

🧡 Charitable Support - Some families apply for funding help through charities or trusts to bridge the gap between standard provision and specialist requirements.

🧡 Education / Local Authority Funding - In some cases, a school or local authority may contribute where a wheelchair is essential for learning and participation.

🧡 Private Purchase - Families may choose to buy directly, sometimes alongside a PWB or charitable support, to ensure the chair is exactly what their child needs.
