Some clients just make you look good a what you do. This client took to changing her diet like a 🦆to water and the results were brilliant. I am 100% sure she will continue with her new way of eating.

Every change of habit throws up new revelations and the process can demand some uncomfortable questions.

Being “dry” over the past 31 days has given me the space to really analyse why I drink and how it really effects me.

Now I have been doing dry January for over 20 years and each time I learn something new about myself;
* I can be disciplined when I want to be.
* I use alcohol as a reward
* Alcohol and celebrations go hand in hand, but not anymore.
* Times are changing and there are lots more non-alcoholic options available.
* The older I get the better I feel without alcohol!
* Alcohol makes me consistently inconsistent
* Without alcohol I don’t eat crisps 🤣
* People are more supportive than the used to be, not a single “go on have a drink” comment.
* I can still be fun without alcohol.
* Restaurant bills are much cheaper and the food becomes more important.
So I’m taking Dry January into February and March with a few dates penciled in where I will enjoy a few drinks with friends on special occasions, just not every weekend.

So if you poo-pooed Dry January, ask yourself why, and give Dry February a go.

New Year, New You, New Diet?

Well I’m sorry to tell you DIETS DON’T WORK, a review of 30 long term studies showed the more diets you have tried the more you will weigh.

Why they don’t work is simple, our bodies are hard wired for survival and to your body dieting feels like starvation so it decreases your metabolism and undermines your innate ability to recognise hunger and fullness. This results in binging, food obsessions, disordered eating and yes you may initially lose weight, but when you do put it back on, which you will, you are likely to put on more.

So when the diets stops working it is time to try something different! Yes?

And that’s where I can help, guilt should play no part in creating a healthy relationship with food that will lead to a healthy weight.

I focus on what is missing from my clients diets. Recognising what your body and mind are crying out for can be very motivating. When motivated changes can feel easy, focusing on adding to our diet often leaves less space for the foods we perhaps know we should be eating a little less of. And when we are eating for our health and the body is getting all of the nutrients it requires, it stops sending you unhelpful messages to sabotage your efforts. Hey presto the weight starts to drop off, your energy levels improve, so to does your mood and sleep, making it easier and easier to never need another diet ever again.

Whether you choose to HRT or not, all of us ladies can benefit from dietary and lifestyle changes in the years (yes years) running up to our menopause.

My key focus for a healthy transition towards the Menopause is the management of STRESS 😫, and that is not just emotional stress, we place the body under many physical stresses each day;

- Not eating properly and robbing our body of the vital nutrients it requires 🥦🥑🍅🫐🐟🥚🥩
- Skipping meals 🤤
- Not regulating our blood sugar levels 🍰📈
- Excessive exercising 🏃🏽‍♀️
- Excessive dieting, to tackle that expanding waistline 🥲 (not working anymore, is it?)
- Lack of sleep and poor quality sleep 🥱
- Relying on stimulants to get us up and down!!! ☕️ 🍷

So when clients come to me I assess the underlying causes of their menopause symptoms and support them with easy to implement diet and lifestyle changes. And sticking to my motto of adding in the ‘good stuff’ they never find the changes difficult.

The years up to and after our menopause should be a time of liberation, it is a time where we need to learn to put ourselves at the front of the queue.

New guidance has been issued by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) regarding belly fat.

Why?

Because belly fat is deemed the most dangerous type of fat,
linked to higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The new guidance encourages people to keep their waist measurement to less than half their height to reduce the risk of potential health problems.

And to seek medical advice if they are at increased health risk.

And what is the standard medical advice I hear you cry?

In a nut shell move more, eat less 🤯 basically count your calories.

But this is out dated and clearly does not work, we are just not getting any smaller!

💡 But there is another way ………………

A Nutritionists approach

1. Stop eating to lose weight and start eating for good health.
2. Learn how to balance your blood sugars and improve your metabolic flexibility.
3. Learn why reducing stress is so important to reduce your belly fat.
4. Stop counting calories, why? because it is soul destroying 😢 and not all calories are created equally 🍫 = 🥑
5. Change the way you view food, count your nutrients not your calories.
6. Learn how to cook, and yes it means spending time in your kitchen. 👩🏼‍🍳
7. Set yourself some positive food goals.
8. And perhaps most importantly, seek out a professional with a proven track record to be your guide………mmmm I wonder who that could be?

So get your tape measure out and see if your waist is less than half your height, no breathing in🤣
