World su***de prevention day not only brings awareness that su***de is the biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. But cases are also increasing in women. 3,341 su***des were registered in the UK between January 2020 and September 2020.
Su***de is preventable. But what should you do if you think/feel someone you know or know of is at risk of su***de. CALL the Samaritans on 116 123 or in an emergency call 999.
First of all - LISTEN to them. Make an effort, not a simple text or message to say, it will be okay in the end. Go and see them, ask how they are feeling, make your feelings known that you are worried, and CARE for them and that they are not alone. If someone is in this frame of mind, we can help them 'burst the bubble'. This can be done simply by reaching out and talking to them to help draw their attention back to the world around them - for example, asking simple questions that don't focus on why they are feeling the way they do, but just allows them to be present. It is important to make the suicidal person feel safe, connected, and validated.
Second of all - ENCOURAGE them to see a professional, with their doctor being the first port of all. Do not be judgemental, if they are in immediate danger call 999. You are not betraying their trust, you could be saving their life.
Third of all - CONTINUE to be supportive. As someone giving support, do not rearrange or cancel plans with them. After speaking with their doctor, encourage them to seek counseling or therapy. If you cannot be there for them or if their situation is a strain for you, call a therapist who can advise you on what to do and when to do it, as everyone's situation is simply not the same.
Today - reach out and call someone who is going through a rough time. If you can, make plans to see them.
