Based in the county town of Hertford, it is the oldest of the Trust’s four hospital sites. The original hospital was built in the early 1800s and in 2003 work began on the development of a brand new hospital on the same site. The new £8.5 million facility opened its doors to patients in November 2004. The hospital provides a wide range of outpatients, ante/post natal, diagnostic and therapeutic services to the people of south-east Hertfordshire. It is open Monday to Friday, except on bank holidays, between 8.00am and 6.00pm.

We want to hear from you…

Changes have been proposed to move Mount Vernon Cancer Centre 5 miles to a brand-new facility next to Watford General Hospital – after a review found the site is no longer suitable for modern cancer treatment. We want to know how the change would affect patients, staff and the public.

Today, on what’s often called the most “blue” day of the year, we’re sharing something that reminds us exactly why kindness, compassion and care matter so much.

Congratulations to DAISY Award winner Louise Davis, Nurse, Short Stay Unit!

Louise has been recognised with a DAISY Award for outstanding, compassionate care after being nominated by a young patient she supported not once, but twice during two frightening hospital admissions.

At just 16, the patient described how overwhelming it felt to be so unwell and admitted to an adult ward for the first time. Despite being heavily pregnant at the time, Louise worked tirelessly to ensure they felt safe, comfortable and seen as a person. She made sure the patient’s mum had a bed to stay overnight, sat with the patient when mum needed to step away, and brought hot chocolates to lift their spirits. She took time to talk about school and interests, bringing a sense of normality into an unfamiliar and frightening environment, care the patient believes genuinely aided their recovery.

Months later, when the patient was admitted again, Louise immediately remembered them. On one of the nights, she noticed the patient’s mum had still not been given a bed after two nights in hospital. Louise called ward after ward, continuing well past midnight until she secured an available one. She supported not only her patient, but their mum too, offering food, hot drinks and reassurance during a difficult time.

Despite being on an adult ward, Louise consistently delivered age‑appropriate care, creating a sense of safety when it mattered most. The patient said seeing her again brought real relief and that her kindness made such a positive impact they now want to become a children’s nurse, having experienced first‑hand the difference a caring, supportive nurse can make.

Thank you, Louise, for the reassurance and humanity you bring to patients and families when they need it most.

Congratulations to DAISY Award winner Midwife Seamairah Razzaq!

Seamairah has been recognised with a DAISY Award for outstanding, person centred care—bringing calm, clarity and confidence to a birth journey that changed course in the final weeks of pregnancy.

From the moment options like induction and caesarean were raised, the patient describes feeling “unsure, confused and stressed.”

Seamairah made time to sit down, talk through each pathway and risk factor, and crucially, listen. She rebuilt confidence with clear, non judgemental explanations, reassuring the patient that whatever she chose, she could absolutely do it. That empathy and belief mattered most when everything felt toughest.

On the morning labour began, Seamairah visited at home for a sweep and set the tone: upbeat, positive and genuinely excited that progress was under way. Throughout the day she checked in, coordinated with colleagues, and rearranged her on call so she could attend the planned home birth. When contractions intensified at 3:30am, she arrived and stayed for over 12 hours. Professional and composed yet warmly human, she coached when needed and chatted about ordinary things when distraction helped, turning vulnerability into comfort: “It felt like having a friend in my home.”

After three hours of pushing and growing fatigue, a hospital transfer for a forceps delivery was agreed. Seamairah remained continuously by the patient’s side, including in theatre, helping welcome a beautiful 10lb 1oz baby girl.

The patient writes: “I will forever be grateful to Seamairah for making my birth experience such a positive one. I know I wouldn’t have felt that positive without her.” A treasured photograph captures it perfectly: baby on mum’s chest, partner close by and Seamairah beaming too. You can see the pride and joy she takes in her work.

This wasn’t one dramatic moment; it was quiet strength, practical expertise and thoughtful advocacy at every step with clear communication, seamless continuity from home to hospital, and unwavering respect for informed choice. Seamairah embodies our trust values of Include, Respect, Improve and models excellence in safety, teamwork, shared decision making and compassionate leadership.

Thank you, Seamairah, for the comfort, dignity and confidence you bring to families on one of the most important days of their lives.
