Tongue tie. It’s been a topic that has come up for me a lot this week. To be honest it’s often in my thoughts. Both my babies were tongued tied, but both had very different stories. Knowledge quite frankly is power. With my first it was not spotted for far too long, feeds were excruciating and she was always hungry. She was very unhappy, unsettled and could not sleep for any long period. It was damaging to my mental health. Can you imagine how at odds you feel as a mum when you resent every feed. I sought support from breastfeeding helplines and face to face at children’s centre breastfeeding support groups but it was missed time and time again. Luckily for me it was my husband that said this just can’t be right, he found out about lactation consultants and we paid for a wonderful local lady called Sally Crowther to get to the cause, which by the way took a matter of minutes. This was at about 8 weeks and by the time the hospital could see her we were nearly 3 months in. Whilst miraculously I did manage to feed my daughter to 14m those first 3 months I was in a perpetual state of darkness, thinking I must try and enjoy this time, but how can you when you are exhausted, in pain and have an unhappy baby. Second time round I did not want the same experience. Baby number 2 was also tongue tied, every midwife and health visitor said otherwise, but this time I was not prepared to wait. I saw Sally in the first few days and went privately to an exceptionally kind woman called Sharon who carried out the tongue tie division and gave so much aftercare to ensure I could teach Aether how to feed correctly. This is why knowledge is power. So if you are struggling with breastfeeding, maybe you too have asked ‘experts’ but things aren’t improving, don’t be afraid to seek support elsewhere. Keep asking for help until you receive it. https://www.breastfeedingdoctor.co.uk
