Hertford Buddhist Meditation

Hertford Buddhist Meditation Part of the Triratna Buddhist Community. All welcome, including newcomers to meditation and non-Buddhists. Tuesday evenings: 7.15pm for 7.30pm start.

If lately, you have been feeling like you need to practice a relaxation technique, or find some peace of mind and make it a regular part of your life, why not try meditation? Meditation is a tried and tested method of achieving calm and concentration. At the Millbridge Room in Maidenhead Yard we practice meditation techniques that were taught by the Buddha in India over 2,500 years ago. Yet these same practices are just as effective today as they were then. Regular practice of the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Development of Loving Kindness will enable you to stay calm, feel less stressed, be more patient and more understanding of others. Newcomers are welcome at our free Tuesday evening meditation meetings to try meditation and ask for advice from experienced meditators. You can come along to the first session which starts at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.15pm) and is designed for people who are new to meditation as well as people who have some experience. You can stay for the tea break which provides a chance to socialise and discuss any questions that come up. You are free to leave or stay on for the second session which begins about 8.30pm. This often consists of a talk and a discussion of an aspect of the teaching of the Buddha - the ethical path, meditation practice and the development of spiritual wisdom. We do not seek to change you - if you practice meditation you will change yourself. Friends may say that you are different, that you have changed for the better. Meditation will provide you with a means to grow and develop, perhaps releasing previously unrealised talents, perhaps even changing your life. So meditation is best practised in contact with a society or Sangha who can offer you the essential support to continue and develop your practice. At the Hertford Buddhist Sangha we have strong links with the Triratna Buddhist Community and especially with the Cambridge Buddhist Centre which offers a full and varied programme for anyone interested in meditation and Buddhism.

🌸 Parinirvana Day 🌸

The Buddha lived a life of service to others, and so, on this day - the day of his passing to final nirvana - we reflect on the teachings he left behind.

In particular, we can contemplate impermanence: how all things that arise must also fall away; how being other-regarding supports a life of contentment; how diligence in our practice must be coupled with curiosity and honesty.

There are some wonderful teachings from our Sangha far and wide with readings from the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta, experiences of applying the Buddhas teachings and their true meanings, and even a pilgrimage to India 🇮🇳, we’ve linked some of these below for your exploration and reflection.

Hi everybody,

I have recently got back from a week-long retreat at Padmaloka, near Norwich - and I have some personal news. On the last day, I was handed a note inviting me to be ordained in July. After many years of preparation, I was overjoyed.

While I was there, a friend who used to work for the RSPB took me birdwatching around the local nature reserve. At one point, he spotted something in the distance and said, "Marsh Harrier."

I could just see a random bird, but he explained how he could tell from its distinctive flight - low and slow, with a few lazy wingbeats followed by a long glide, holding its wings in a V-shape.

It struck me that someone who knows what to look for can spot things the rest of us would miss. That's one of the things I value about sangha - people who can see what we can't see yet, and we learn from each other.

Tonight is the final session of our current meditation course. I'll be leading with Srigarbha, and Maisie will be giving a short talk. Do come along if you can. It doesn't matter if you've missed previous weeks, or if this is your first time - we always give full instructions. From next week onwards we continue with our drop-in classes, so just come whenever you can.

And if you'd like to go deeper, we have a day retreat coming up:

Meditation Day Retreat
Sunday 22nd Feb, 10am-4pm, Place House Hall
Led by Samudraghosha

Meditation is a path of inner transformation centred upon two qualities: awareness and kindness. Through cultivating these qualities we become increasingly comfortable to open to our experience in each moment, whatever it may be - to be with ourselves just as we are, free from inner conflict. At the same time, we learn that our experience of the moment cannot define us, and that there are hidden potentialities of calm, open-heartedness, confidence and joy waiting to be revealed and to manifest in our lives.

On this day retreat, we'll be doing periods of meditation and related exercises based around the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana (the cultivation of metta or loving-kindness). There will be teaching and time to explore our experience in pairs or small groups, as well as ample opportunity for questions.

The day is open to all adults, regardless of previous experience. Please bring food to share for a vegetarian/vegan lunch.

There is no charge (donations on the day will be welcome). Please book by emailing hertsbuddhistmeditation@gmail.com. The booking deadline is 12pm on Friday 20 Feb.

With warmth,
Keith

🧘‍♀️2 weeks left of the meditation challenge 🧘‍♀️

How’s it been for you? Has your meditation routine been consistent? Meditation ‘felt better’?

The challenge for us has given us an opportunity to reflect on our practice and help us initiate small but consistent changes that feel possible in our busy lives. The Buddha didn’t teach us to meditate all day, every day, but he did tell his followers that consistent practice, awareness of the breath and integration of loving-kindness can reduce suffering in our lives.

If you haven’t quite found that yet, or joined us yet we begin the last 2 weeks of our challenge next week. Tues 7.15pm, Mill Bridge Rooms.

We’ll greet you there.

💤 Awakening to Reality 💤

Week one of our meditation challenges opened us to possibility of awakening to reality. We explored this idea through our own lived experiences. Dropping our awareness from our minds and into our bodies; anchoring in the awareness of sensation rather than the stories our minds like to tell us.

Getting in touch with our bodies this way, noticing the breath as a simple but complex, automatic but noticeable, allowed us to maintain connection to each moment.

This, the awareness of each passing in breath and out, was our first week in a nut shell.

The challenge this week is to make a commitment to yourself: meditate on the breath. Start today (if you didn’t start on Tuesday), for as many minutes as you can allow, at the same time and in the same place.

We’ll see you on Tuesday, where we expand into broader awareness and our challenge begins again.

Dear Friends,

I hope you've had a restful Christmas break. As we prepare to return to our routines on Monday, I've been reflecting on how easy it is to lose that sense of spaciousness the holidays can bring – those moments when time seems to slow and we catch ourselves simply being rather than constantly doing.

The question I keep coming back to is: how do we hold onto some of that stillness as life speeds up again? This is, in essence, what meditation offers – not an escape from our busy lives, but a way of being more fully present within them.

Six Week Meditation Challenge
With this in mind, I'm pleased to say that our Six Week Meditation Challenge begins this Tuesday, 6th January, at The Millbridge Rooms in Hertford. Just turn up between 7:00 and 7:15 PM – it's open to all, and is on a donation basis.

Over the six weeks we'll explore themes that build upon one another: awakening to reality, cultivating a calm and focused mind, developing loving-kindness (metta), balancing effort with openness, and integrating practice into daily life. We'll be learning two core meditation practices – the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana – with full instruction given each week.

The "challenge" element is simply an invitation to commit to meditating regularly during the course – whether that's five, six, or seven days a week. There's something powerful about making such a commitment within a supportive group.

If you're new to meditation, this is a perfect time to join us. This first evening in January is always our meeting with the most newcomers, and we'll be teaching from first principles.

And if you've been practising for a while but haven't been along recently, or feel stuck in a rut, the momentum of a group commitment can be wonderfully reinvigorating. It is always good to see our old friends :-)

The course works best if you can come every week, but come when you can – and if you miss a week or two or several, please come back anyway!

As always, there'll be meditation instruction, discussion, friendly faces, and yes – tea and biscuits.

With warmth,
Keith
