Tip no.5: Breathe
I am sorry to say but you do need to learn how to SLOW YOUR BREATH. People think I am joking when I say this…I am not! Practice makes perfect.

Breathe in for 4.
Breathe out for 8.
Do this for 1 minute.

Why 1 minute? This is usually how long a contraction lasts 🙌 Slowing your breath regulates your cortisol levels, relaxes your body and your mind, regulates you and your baby and can help keep you in control with focus. It’s also evidence based!!!

So ride those waves.

Tip no.4: Prepare for your water birth.
Plan plan plan!
I’ve had so many doula clients over the years unsure about water. Then when they get in they find it hard to move around because they haven’t planned moving in water. Sounds crazy but it’s not as simple as on land. It takes some brain power at times. Think about how to move and maximise comfort FOR YOU. Don’t worry about your birth team we will work around you 😉 (I am usually drenched and somewhere hurts 😜).
If you practice beforehand it will come to you naturally. Either do a test run (make sure you use a new pool liner every time), try moving around a bath or even have a little shimmy in a local pool.
Water makes you buoyant. If takes the weight off and means your pelvis can move freely even if floating on your back 🙌
If you haven’t thought about it now is the time to discuss options 👍🏼

Even though most of the evidence comes from in Labour use I am a huge fan of a birth ball in pregnancy. It’s an easy way to create comfort for your back and hips and optimising a good position for your baby.

Upright, forward and open! ✨ The guru of words for helping baby into the optimal position for birth. Think lean forward not leaning back ✔️ There is a reason women scrubbing floors in the past was a good thing 😆 (not so much for progressive empowerment).

So get bouncing, rotating and hip swinging.!

Tip no.2: Get a doula or private support person.
A birth doula can help you physically and emotionally throughout your pregnancy, labour and birth. Usually not tied to the hospital and an unbiased person who can have your back through any situations that arise. We support you on YOUR journey with evidence based knowledge, kindness, empathy and help you to achieve a positive birth experience.
You could take a friend or trusted person along as you can have two birth partners (not in theatre).
Or you could even get a private midwife who will do all of the above but will be a trusted medical person on your side to look after the health of you and your baby.

You are not alone.
