These are the most recent stats from Lister Hospital.
The stats are very vague and dont give us much info.

What we can see is that:
- unassisted vaginal births are consistently sitting at under 50%
- caesarean births are consistently sitting between 40 and 50%
- assisted births are consistently sitting at around 10-12%

The vast majority of births happen in the CLU, but we dont know how many chose that as their place of birth vs who got transferred there.

We also don't know how many of these abdominal births were elective / planned vs how many were unplanned.

On some months there were at least 10 homebirths, which while still a low number, shows that our community midwives are actively attending homebirths which is more than can be said for lots of trusts. This number also won't include those that transferred in during labour.

All this information can be found on the Lister Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership instagram and page.
Its worth giving them a follow for updates around processes at Lister, any changes that are coming and to get a feel for the trust. They also have an email address you can contact if you need their help.

✨️ B is for Big Babies ✨️

Have you been told your baby is measuring big?
Have you been told you will need to be induced?
Have you been given the latest evidence?
Have you been told the risks of induction vs the risks of waiting?

There's always options, there's always questions you can ask and research you can do to make sure your care is personalised.

For more information on the study, Dr Sara Wickham has done a great blog post - simply Google Dr Sara Wickham Big Baby Trial.

She also covers inductions and Big Babies in her book In Your Own Time.

🧠 Don't forget to use your BRAIN when making any decision.

✨️D is for Delayed Cord Clamping✨️

Or if you want baby to get alllll the blood, you can ask to wait for white - literally waiting for the umbilical cord to turn completely white before clamping it.

Have you heard of cord ties before? I have never used one or seen one in person, but some people like to use them as a softer and more eco-friendly option.

Some people opt not to cut the cord at all, and to leave baby attached to the placenta until it naturally falls off. This is called a lotus birth. There is pretty much zero evidence into the benefits of a lotus birth, but we do know it increases the risk of infection.

✨️ E is for Episiotomy ✨️

A cut that is ✨️your✨️ choice. It can not be performed without your informed consent. And informed consent means they should tell you why they feel it should be done, what alternatives there are, and what the risks and benefits are.

They will give you a local anaesthetic and should allow time for this to kick in so you don't feel anything, so there is a little time to ask questions!

In England, episiotomies are not given routinely and are only suggested in the cases outlined in the post or if you are exhausted from pushing and just need a little help.

It is important to care for your scar when recovering from childbirth.
