Some young people put a lot of effort into appearing fine, even when they are struggling underneath.

This is sometimes called masking. While it can help young people cope short term, it can also make it harder to notice when support is needed.

Creating space for honest conversations, even when things seem okay, can help young people feel safer being themselves.

Some young people keep meeting expectations even when it takes a significant amount of internal effort.

Appearing to cope does not always mean things feel manageable. Acknowledging effort rather than outcomes and offering space to talk can help reduce pressure and exhaustion.

Mental Health Awareness Week is also a reminder that looking after wellbeing is not selfish, for young people or for the adults supporting them.

Children and young people often hold pressure quietly. Encouraging rest, balance and open conversations helps protect their mental health now and in the future.

It’s also important that parents and carers look after their own wellbeing. Modelling self care shows young people that mental health matters at every age.

Exam pressure often increases around this time of year, and Mental Health Awareness Week is a good reminder that wellbeing matters alongside academic achievement.

Stress may show up as worry, irritability, exhaustion, sleep problems or avoidance of revision. Parents and carers can help by encouraging realistic plans, rest breaks and reassuring young people that exams do not define their worth.

Listening without pressure and focusing on effort rather than outcomes can help reduce anxiety and build confidence.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, a chance to focus on wellbeing and open conversations about mental health.

Many young people struggle to explain how they are feeling or worry about being misunderstood. Creating safe, calm opportunities to listen can help them feel more confident opening up.

Parents and carers don’t need to fix everything. Being present, patient and open sends a powerful message that young people’s mental health matters.
