A favourite summer footwear but are they good for us?

As bad as an elevated heel in shoes might be, one of the poorest types of footwear for the human foot is the flip flop. They create big problems with how the foot functions and should be avoided.

When your big toe extends with walking it activates a system of fascial cables that turns your foot into a rigid lever to push off on. Flip flops remove that important mechanism by forcing you to clench your toes to stop them from falling off.

By deactivating that mechanism your foot becomes unstable and over time creates big problems with your movement mechanics upstream. Want to see what I’m talking about first-hand? Try sprinting in flip flops and see how that goes.

Get rid of your flip flops and spend more time barefoot - stronger, healthier feet are guaranteed to result. If you want to wear sandals make sure they anchor to your foot at the ankle instead of only at the big toe.

Massage has a positive effect on the vagus nerve, the main parasympathetic highway between your brain and major organs.

Your heart beats fast and your blood pressure increases.

It also sends a message to your lungs to breathe more slowly and deeply.

It also sends a message to your digestive system to pick up the pace. (The reverse happens when you're stressed: Your heart, lungs go on overdrive, and your stomach slows its food processing.)
