🥐☕ This week’s excuse to enjoy flaky, buttery layers — completely guilt-free! ☕🥐

This week at Hesslewood House Care Home, residents treated themselves to a classic croissant, perfectly paired with a cup of tea or coffee — and it went down an absolute treat!

But the fun didn’t stop there… we also got creative and tried our hand at origami, folding our very own paper croissants. A lovely mix of conversation, concentration and a few laughs along the way.

Taking part were David, Lynn, Gwen, John, Jennifer, Jean, Sylvia, Audrey and Barbara, all enjoying the simple pleasure of good food, gentle creativity and time spent together.

Sometimes it’s the little things — a warm drink, a tasty bite and a shared activity — that make the day feel extra special 💛

🧱🎉 They celebrated LEGO Day at Hesslewood House! 🎉🧱

This week, January 28th, at Hesslewood House Care Home, residents and staff travelled straight back to childhood as we celebrated LEGO Day — and what a fun-filled day it was!

From building, imagining and laughing together, it was wonderful to see just how timeless those little plastic bricks really are. LEGO has certainly come a long way from the humble blocks many of us remember, but the joy it brings hasn’t changed one bit 😊

We played two brilliant games — LEGO hoopla and “pin the LEGO man on the board” — and most residents managed to get the pieces in the right order (impressive teamwork all round!).

Joining in the fun were Anne, Anita, Audrey, Gwen, Kathleen, Jean, Sylvia, Lynn, Geoff, Eric and Barbara, all proving that play really has no age limit 💛

A little LEGO history too: LEGO began back in 1932 in Denmark, when Ole Kirk Christiansen started making toys during the Great Depression. The name LEGO comes from the Danish phrase “leg godt”, meaning “play well” — something we definitely did today!

And best of all… no LEGO ended up on the floor — so no sore feet 😄 Anyone who’s ever stepped on a brick will know just how lucky we were!

Another joyful, laughter-filled day at Hesslewood House 🧡

🌧️🧩 Rainy days made brighter at Hesslewood House 🧩🌧️

When the weather outside is cold, wet and miserable, there’s nothing better than slowing things down and enjoying the simple pleasures indoors.

Yesterday afternoon at Hesslewood House, our residents spent a relaxed and cosy time working on jigsaws and puzzles — and it was just what everyone needed. Audrey, Anita, Tom, Kathleen, Hilary, Lynn and Pat gathered around the table, chatting, concentrating and enjoying the calm of doing something together.

The motto of the day?
“One piece at a time!” 😊

What our residents loved most was being able to take their time — no rushing, no pressure — just enjoying the process and letting the puzzle come together at its own pace.

Moments like these are so important. They offer relaxation, gentle mental stimulation and the chance to connect with one another, especially on days when heading out isn’t an option.

At Hesslewood House, it’s often the quieter activities that bring the biggest sense of comfort 💙

🌏✨ A Trip Around the World at Hesslewood House ✨🌏

This week at Hesslewood House, residents travelled all the way to Australia — without even leaving the comfort of home 🇦🇺

Monday was dedicated to exploring Australian culture, history and music, with plenty of conversation along the way. Residents shared memories of travel, family connections and experiences that were sparked by the discussion, creating a lovely buzz around the room.

With lots of creativity (and laughter!), residents even had a go at making and playing their own didgeridoo — which quickly became a real talking point and brought the activity to life 🎶

The group also chatted about why 26 January is an important date in Australian history, marking the arrival of the First Fleet into Port Jackson in 1788. These conversations naturally led to wider reflections on history, culture and how different countries mark significant moments in time.

Activities like this are so powerful. They encourage curiosity, stimulate memory, spark meaningful conversation and — most importantly — bring people together through shared learning and enjoyment 💛

At Hesslewood House, wellbeing is about more than routine. It’s about keeping minds active, encouraging connection and creating moments that residents genuinely enjoy and remember.

Happy two years with Strong Life Care !

🎉 Two Years of Hesslewood House with Strong Life Care 🎉

This month marks two years since Hesslewood House became part of the Strong Life Care family — and what a fantastic journey it’s been.

Over the past two years, Hesslewood House Care Home has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of Alison Hudspeth-Lamb, supported by regular investment, hands-on guidance and a senior management team that is never far away. That steady support helps the home tick along smoothly every single day — not just when inspections come around.

That hard work was recently recognised with a Good rating across the board from the Care Quality Commission, reflecting the care, consistency and commitment shown by the whole team.

Residents are settled, supported and engaged, and there’s a real sense of community within the home. Add to that a recent appearance on BBC Breakfast on Christmas Eve, and it’s clear that Hesslewood House is a place full of life, stories and connection.

There’s always something going on at Hesslewood House — and even more to be proud of.

A huge well done to Alison and the entire team, and thank you to the residents and families who make the home what it is. 💚

📜🥃 Burns Night Celebrations at Hesslewood House!

This weekend, residents at Hesslewood House Care Home in Hessle, part of the Strong Life Care group joined in a much-loved tradition — Burns Night — with poetry, crafts, and a classic Scottish feast! 💙

Held every year on 25th January, Burns Night celebrates the life and work of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet. Known for capturing the spirit of everyday life through his poetry and song, his legacy lives on in care homes, communities, and celebrations across the country.

Our residents enjoyed:
📖 Readings of Burns’ famous poems
🍽️ A delicious Burns Night lunch of haggis, neeps and tatties
🎨 Crafts and conversations that sparked fond memories and learning

Celebrating meaningful dates like this is part of the person-centred care we believe in — bringing people together, sharing stories, and making every day special.

Here’s to tradition, connection and lots of full plates! 💛

🁢🁣 The Great Hesslewood Dominoes Championship! 🁣🁢

At Hesslewood House Care Home, there’s one afternoon tradition that’s taken off in a big way — the Battle of the Dominoes!

Every day since the start of the year, the same group of residents have gathered for some friendly (and now fiercely competitive!) games of dominoes. They play in groups, face off with the winners… and no one wants to miss a match.

But this daily event is more than just a bit of fun.

Games like dominoes are brilliant for:
🧠 Boosting memory and focus
➕ Supporting mental agility and maths skills
💬 Encouraging conversation, laughter and connection
🤝 Reducing feelings of isolation and promoting friendship

It’s quickly become a highlight of the day — and a perfect example of how meaningful activities can support both wellbeing and a real sense of belonging.

Same time tomorrow? You bet! 😉

🎶 Music Therapy Fun at Hesslewood House! 🎸🎵

Today’s music therapy session had something for everyone — from relaxing to the calm, chilled-out tracks… to getting up and rocking out when the tempo picked up!

There was plenty of arm waving, air guitar, toe tapping and big smiles all round 💃🕺

Whether seated or on their feet, our residents loved the chance to express themselves through music — it’s always such a joyful, feel-good session that brings everyone together.

Music really is good for the soul 🎼💛

🪶🐦 The Big Garden Birdwatch at Hesslewood House!

This week, residents at Hesslewood House Care Home in Hessle have been getting involved in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch — and what a lovely time we’ve had!

In the days before, our residents made their own bird feeders to hang around our beautiful gardens. Today, with binoculars in hand, we headed outside in the hope of spotting some of our feathered friends.

Sadly, the weather had other plans, and most of the birds decided to stay tucked away… but we did get to see our very own show-offs — the Hesslewood peacocks, who never miss a chance to display those fabulous feathers! 🦚

Even though the birds were quiet, the residents who took part had a fantastic time. The fresh air, the creativity, and the calm of being close to nature made it such a meaningful activity.

These are the little moments that bring big smiles. 💛
And we’ll definitely be out again soon… birds, you’ve been warned!
