Your horse will thank you for grooming them 🐴✨

Grooming is a great way to bond with your horse—especially on days when you don’t have time to ride.

Some key benefits of regular grooming include:

1. Warms up the muscles🌡
Gentle grooming helps prepare the muscles before exercise or stretching, reducing the risk of injury.

2. Increases blood flow🩸
Improved circulation delivers nutrient-rich blood to the muscles and helps remove waste products—supporting recovery.

3. Helps identify areas of tension or discomfort💢
Spotting issues early means they can be addressed sooner, reducing the chance of more serious problems.

4. Improves coat health🌟
Grooming stimulates natural oil production, leaving your horse’s coat soft, shiny, and free from dirt and loose hair.

Muscle Monday 💪!

This week, we’re focusing on the triceps brachii, an essential muscle in equine movement. The triceps brachii plays a key role in extending the elbow, assisting with shoulder flexion, and supporting medial rotation of the limb.

Signs of Tension:
🐴 Toe dragging
🐴 Shortened stride length
🐴 Sensitivity or discomfort upon palpation
🐴 Difficulty performing lateral movements
🐴 Lameness

Common Causes of Tension:
🐴 Inadequate warm-up or cool-down routines
🐴 Poorly fitting saddle
🐴 Compensation for tension elsewhere in the body
🐴 An unbalanced rider
🐴 Hard or repetitive work

To help maintain optimal function of the triceps brachii and prevent the development of tension:
• Ensure you have a correctly fitting saddle
• Incorporate a variety of exercises into the training
• Schedule regular bodywork to prevent tension or injury
• Allow sufficient time for warm-ups and recovery.

Proactive management of these factors can enhance comfort, support performance, and promote overall musculoskeletal health in the horse.

Muscle Monday 💪!

This week, we're looking at the supraspinatus muscle. This muscle is located at the front of the shoulder. It stabilises and extends the shoulder. Let's explore signs and causes of tension, as well as ways to relieve discomfort.

Signs of Tension:
🐴 Shortened strides
🐴 Muscle soreness
🐴 Lameness
🐴 Toe dragging
🐴 Relucant to extend the foreleg

Causes of Tension:
🐴 An injury (e.g. fall or kick)
🐴 Uneven jumping/landing
🐴 Insufficient top line or core stability
🐴 Working on the forehand

Regular stretches, massage and exercises to strengthen the muscles can help reduce tension and prevent injury.

With ongoing rainfall 🌧, it can often be challenging to maintain a consistent riding routine.
However, this presents an excellent opportunity to explore alternative activities that allow you to spend quality time with your horse while keeping them mentally and physically stimulated.

Below are several options to try:

1. Carrot Stretches 🥕
Carrot stretches are simple to perform and can be carried out either in the stable or in the field. They are highly beneficial for maintaining your horse’s suppleness and flexibility, particularly if they have been standing in the stable for extended periods. Before undertaking any stretching exercises, ensure your horse is properly warmed up. This can be achieved by walking them in hand to gently prepare the muscles.

2. Enrichment Toys 🧸
Stable toys, such as treat-dispensing balls or hanging carrot balls, provide excellent mental stimulation. These enrichment tools help alleviate boredom, encourage natural foraging behaviours, and keep your horse engaged while stabled.

3. Pamper Session 💆‍♀️
A quiet grooming session or gentle massage can be a wonderful way to relax your horse and strengthen your bond. Grooming promotes healthy circulation throughout the muscles and may help reduce the risk of injury. It is worth noting that horses can be more susceptible to muscle tension during the winter months due to colder temperatures, increased time spent in the stable, and inconsistent workloads.

Welcome to Muscle Monday 💪!

This week, we're focusing on the brachiocephalicus muscle. Located in the neck, it helps with shoulder extension, neck movement, and overall balance. Let's explore its functions, signs of tension, and ways to alleviate discomfort.

Signs of Tension:
🐴Uneven movement
🐴Difficulty bending the neck
🐴Stiffness when turning
🐴High head carriage
🐴Discomfort with the bridle

Causes of Tension:
🐴Heavy on the forehand
🐴Shoulder tension
🐴Incorrect saddle fit
🐴Harsh riding
🐴Poll tension

Regular massage, stretches, and proper saddle fitting can help ease tension. If you think your horse needs some attention, why not book a massage today!
