Happy World Octopus Day! 🐙 Today, October 8th, we're celebrating these incredible creatures and their truly amazing eyes here at The Little Spectacle Shop in Hexham!

Did you know that octopuses, despite being largely colourblind, possess some of the most fascinating vision in the animal kingdom? Their eyes are remarkably similar to human eyes in structure, but that's where the similarities end! Octopuses dedicate a whopping 70% of their brain to visual processing, helping them navigate their underwater world with incredible precision.

One of the most mind-blowing facts is how they perceive colour. Instead of having colour-sensitive cells like us, octopuses have unique, often dumbbell-shaped pupils that act like prisms! This allows them to scatter white light into its component colours, giving them a way to perceive colour changes in their environment, even without traditional colour vision! This incredible adaptation helps them with their famous camouflage.

So, next time you're thinking about your own amazing eyes and perhaps needing a new pair of spectacles, spare a thought for the octopus and its truly unique way of seeing the world!
