🌟UPDATE🌟
Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is being introduced across Helping Hands.
Oliver McGowan was a young man with a mild learning disability, autism, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. He died aged 18 following failures in care after being admitted to hospital. His family campaigned for changes to improve understanding and care for people with a learning disability and/or autism. This led to new legal requirements for staff training, which came into force in September 2025.
The training focuses on:
•understanding learning disabilities and autism
•effective communication
•promoting independence
•person-centred care
•recognising and responding to individual needs
Our Training Manager has completed the accredited programme and is now a registered facilitator, working alongside co-facilitators with lived experience of learning disability and autism.
Planning is already underway, with the first sessions due to begin in April.
This forms part of our ongoing work to strengthen practice and improve outcomes for the people we support.
