🌍🐾 World Spay Day 2026 🐾🌍

At Orchard House Veterinary Surgery, World Spay Day is close to our hearts 💚

We’re all about doing what’s best for your pets—kindly, carefully, and with a big dose of Orchard House love. We offer standard spay procedures and also Laparoscopic procedures (keyhole surgery)

Why we’re proud to offer laparoscopic (keyhole) spay surgery ✨

It’s a more advanced option and still something only a small number of practices provide. For many pets, it means:
🐶 Smaller incisions
🐱 Less discomfort
💤 Faster recovery
🏡 Quicker return to normal life

Spaying is such an important step in protecting pet health and helping reduce unwanted litters—and being able to offer a gentler, modern approach is something we’re really passionate about.

Here’s to healthier pets, happy recoveries, and a future with fewer unwanted animals. 💕

It's world spay day!

Every year, Vets are asked to spread awareness about the importance of spaying (and neutering in general!) your pet.

Did you know we offer Laparoscopic keyhole spays? - We are one of very few practices in the north east to offer this service. You can learn more about that here > https://www.orchardhousevets.com/services/laparoscopic-keyhole-surgery/

If you didn't know that, then we bet you also didn't know that we offer free laparoscopic health checks with our laparoscopic surgeon? This appointment is a chance for you to learn about laparoscopic procedures and why they differ from the standard spay procedure.

And finally - have a read of our blog about World Spay Day here > https://www.orchardhousevets.com/health-wellbeing/world-spay-day/

Bad breath in pets is NOT normal, and you’re absolutely right to question it.

A little “morning breath” can happen, but persistent or noticeably smelly breath is almost always a sign of an underlying issue. In pets, the most common cause is dental disease—something that can be tricky for both owners and vets to detect until it’s advanced, because animals often hide discomfort.

Why bad breath matters

Bad breath (halitosis) in dogs or cats may indicate:
~ Plaque and tartar build-up
~ Gingivitis or periodontal disease
~ Tooth decay or infection
~ A foreign object stuck in the mouth
~ Digestive or metabolic issues (in more severe cases)

When to seek veterinary care

If your pet’s breath:
~ Suddenly becomes worse
~ Smells unusually foul (rotten, metallic, or sweet)
~ Is accompanied by drooling, pawing at the mouth, reduced appetite, or difficulty chewing

…then they should be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Takeaway

Bad breath isn’t “just a pet thing.” It’s a health signal, and early detection can prevent pain and more serious complications.

Shrove Tuesday, (also known as Pancake Day) is the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the final day of indulgence before the 40-day fasting season of Lent. It is a Christian tradition to use up rich, fatty foods like eggs, milk, and sugar by making pancakes.

Whilst pancakes themselves are not suitable for dogs (sugar!) - you can make a canine version of a pancake! Have a great pancake day!

🐾 Dog-Friendly Pancakes

No sugar, no salt, no chocolate, no xylitol, no sweeteners.

Ingredients
1 ripe banana, mashed
1 medium egg
2 tablespoons peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free!)
50 g rolled oats, blended into flour or 50 g oat flour
1–3 tablespoons water (as needed)
Optional: a few blueberries or a tiny pinch of cinnamon

Method
If using oats, blitz them in a blender to make a fine flour.
Mash the banana in a bowl.
Beat in the egg and peanut butter until smooth.
Stir in the oat flour. Add a little water if the batter is too thick.
Heat a non-stick frying pan over low to medium heat (wipe with a tiny bit of oil if needed).
Drop small spoonful's of batter into the pan to make mini pancakes.
Cook for about 1–2 minutes per side until set and lightly golden.

Let them cool fully before giving any to your dog.
