Daphne's Diary!! 🦄🦷🎉

In preparation for her work to begin, we've had an amazing visit from the dentist. Elle Humphrey from and associates was super patient and calm with her, giving her a fantastic experience, and she earned her first award! 🥇 🎉👏 She still has some baby tooth caps to lose and monitor, and had some sharp edges filed, so we're all set from a biting perspective now.

Regular dental check-ups by a fully qualified Equine Dental Technician are a vital part of any horse's health and performance team management, regardless of age. It's definitely one of the questions I'll ask during an initial physio assessment... “When did you last have your horse's teeth checked?’ …🤔🧐🥕

An excellent example of how being an ACPAT PHYSIOTHERAPIST allowed First Class Physiotherapy to draw upon extensive experience, knowledge and techniques used as a HUMAN CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST, assisting the vets with this difficult diagnosis.

Well done First Class Physiotherapy, looking forward to reading your article in the ACPAT JOURNAL.

I’m super proud to have had one of my case study articles published in the ACPAT journal 😊
Several of the diagnostic and treatment ideas for this horse only came about because of my human degree background. This is why ACPAT chartered physiotherapists have such extensive knowledge, and is another demonstration to prove that we do far more than simply look at or treat muscles! In this instance I identified neural impairment and was able to work with the vet to help with diagnosis.

Brilliant explanation linked to research of something I see most often.

It’s so important to…

A) look at the horse as a whole, we all know this but do we all..

B) work alongside and COMMUNICATE with other equine professionals such as farriers, vets etc to ensure that we are working on the pieces of the puzzle together and breaking the compensatory cycle, not just ‘treating’ the symptoms in our own little box!

Negative plantar angle was associated with multiple areas of clinically relevant increased surface emissivity along the dorsal myofascial line.

𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧, 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭

High levels of insulin - commonly associated with excess body fat in a number of breeds and types including native ponies and Spanish horses (PRE/Andalusian) - has a degradative effect on cartilage which long term, is likely to increase the risk of arthritis.

Chronic obesity can have a threefold harmful effects on the joints:

1. excess weight
2. systemic fat (adipose)-tissue related inflammation
3. excess insulin (hyperinsulinaemia) which appears to have a degradative effect on joint cartilage (research shows evidence)
