As Hughenden Gardens Village is an official deaf hub, we’re always looking for ways to make our community even more welcoming and accessible 💛

This Deaf Awareness Week, we’ve installed a new tablet by reception with helpful information displayed through BSL on the tablet for visitors from the deaf community. Here’s what Village Manager, Belinda, had to say about the project:

"The reason we decided to do this is because it's not always realistic to have a staff member or resident who can sign available to let visitors know this information. This way we can make our guests feel welcome, safe and included in our community.

The project was a real collaboration supported by various ExtraCare staff members and an external visitor who signed the scripts that we put together, and that script was then put on the video as subtitles, so the video works for both deaf and hearing visitors."

We’re really pleased to be taking another step towards making Hughenden Gardens Village as inclusive as it can be!
