What do you usually do when you are stressed or overwhelmed?
Being resilient makes it easier to bounce back from adversity, but just because you might be resilient on average does not mean that you are able to be resilient in the moment. This is where tactics of micro-resilience could be useful for everyone.
Micro-resilience is a strategy of small, easy recoveries and adjustments in stressful situations that help you focus and retain your energy. According to St. John and Haines (2017), there are 5 domains where these small adjustments could lead to big changes in terms of productivity, engagement and well-being.
🧠 Refocus your brain - use your brain more effectively by not multitasking, but focusing on one task at a time. For example, create times of focused effort in your day („island in the stream“) during which you only focus on your tasks without interruptions.
⏰ Reset your primitive alarms - do not let anger or panic take over, separate yourself from your emotions. For example, do a breathing exercise to calm your body down.
🔁 Reframe your attitude - our brains have a tendency to focus on the negatives (because they help us identify threat easier). Being more optimistic however, can help enhance creativity, relationships and productivity. Force yourself to look at a situation from a more positive angle.
💧 Refresh your body - not drinking enough impairs cognitive functions. Whenever you feel stuck, drink a small amount of water.
🎯 Renew your spirit - find your overall purpose and affirm your most important goals. Inspire yourself by constantly reminding yourself of your values and goals.
