Why is staying hydrated so important if you have a urinary catheter?
Did you know our bodies naturally lose between 1,600ml and 2,800ml of fluid every day through the toilet, sweating, and even breathing? Now imagine adding a urinary catheter on top of that. Replacing this lost fluid is essential to prevent dehydration, unless there is a reason not too, as some people can or may be on restricted fluids. Always check with your continence nurse.
If you don’t drink enough, dehydration can increase the risk of catheter blockages and catheter-associated urinary tract infections. That’s why staying well-hydrated is so important.
