Horses were never designed to wear bridles, but they do seem to adapt to our human creations. Head discomfort often goes unnoticed until a behavioral or physical problem shows up. Luckily though, head stress due to bridles is easy to fix.

Did you know? Who has a horse with one of these thumbprints?

A "Prophet's Thumbprint" is a birthmark in the form of an indentation, usually found on the side of a horse’s neck, and it is totally harmless although it comes with a lovely legendary story!

The Prophet Mohammed was wandering the desert with his herd of horses for many days, and as they approached an oasis he sent them forth to drink. But as the thirsty horses approached the water, he called them back. Only five of his mares stopped and returned to him, and to thank them for their loyalty he blessed them by pressing his thumbprint into their necks.
It’s believed that a horse with such a mark will be outstanding, being a descendant of one of these brood mares that the Prophet Mohammed particularly treasured.

EQUINE ASTHMA & POLLEN:

The main cause of equine asthma is dust particles from hay and bedding so it is not often seen in horses kept out at grass 24/7 🌾. However, some horses appear to suffer from 'summer pasture asthma' in late spring and summer when pollen 🌼🌸 and air pollution (often from agricultural machinery 🚜) exacerbate symptoms, as well as heat and humidity ☀️. Whilst it is often thought of as an allergy, horses usually develop asthma without any underlying allergies at all.

The first signs of equine asthma you might notice are an infrequent cough (coughing is common but not necessarily normal!). Your horse may take a little longer to recover after exercise or show some nasal discharge. It is important that these subtle signs are recognised and your vet is contacted as soon as possible because without treatment the condition deteriorates over time until it becomes difficult for the horse to breathe even at rest, their performance is affected, they are intolerant to exercise and they suffer from a chronic cough and snotty nose.

Horses with pasture-associated asthma benefit from living inside well-ventilated, clean and low-dust stables (feeding soaked hay and avoiding straw as bedding). Inflammation in the lower airways is usually treated with inhalers, and the sooner the better: once narrowing of the airways occurs it is difficult to reverse, so if we can recognise and treat asthma symptoms at an early stage we have a better chance of preventing it becoming severe and debilitating later in life.

So today I treated this lovely mare because she had been bucking her owner off which was very unusual!

I found her muscles were very uneven so we worked with levelling her up. She had some muscle weakness one side & tightness.

With a good session of treatment and some homework exercises She should be much more comfortable and back to her normal self ☺️

(Note saddle been checked)
