🏉⚽️🏑 Preseason - always a busy time for us in clinic…

As a lot of field based sport preseason training gets underway here are 4 concise tips for avoiding injury this preseason.

✅ 📈Build Gradually
Start with moderate intensity and volume, then progressively increase over weeks. Your body needs time to adapt! Avoid the cliché mad fitness test on the first night.

✅ 🧘‍♂️Prioritise Recovery
Recovery is essential especially when your load increases. Include rest days, active recovery, 8+ hours of sleep and fuel your body right.

✅ 👂Listen to Your Body
A little soreness or DOMS is normal — sharp pain is not. Don’t ignore warning signs, this is the time where injury is most common.

✅ 📏
Track load and take baseline tests.
Use tools such as RPE or GPS if available. Take baseline strength scores which can be used for rehab monitoring during the season. E.g knee to wall, 3RM squat and shoulder external rotation strength.

Injury vs pain 🤕..

Unsure whether you have an injury or are just feeling wrecked following the marathon or recent event? Here’s a few ways they might differ 👇

Pain/DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness) ✅

Tenderness of muscles
Kicks in 12–24 hrs after
Feels like stiffness or dull ache
Improves in a few days with rest & light movement

Injury 🚨

Sharp or stabbing pain
Swelling or bruising
Pain that gets worse or sticks around and is affecting sleep
Swelling/ heat around an area

If in doubt get it checked out ‼️

Good luck to all those competing in the Belfast City Marathon this Sunday 🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

Not long to go now and so we have compiled our top 5 tips in the lead up to ensure you get your body feeling right 💪🏻

Seeing a lot of running niggles and pains over the past couple of weeks as runners come towards their longest training distances before tapering off for the Belfast Marathon on the 4th of May 🏃‍♀️

Often it’s about managing load as smart as possible over these final few weeks and re-mapping your training plan according to the type of niggle/pain as well as your different lifestyle factors. Rehab will of course be important but getting the right structure is crucial at this stage for getting over the finish line on May the 4th.

These niggles and pains may not be significant injuries yet however they definitely have the potential to escalate so it’s best to get them checked!
