The IFPA believes wholeheartedly in the principles and philosophies of holistic health, health care and the promotion of well-being for the individual. These principles and beliefs are the foundations of the IFPA's aims and objectives for its members together with its strong codes of ethics and practice. About Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils by different methods to enhance the well-being of the mind, body and spirit. It uses pure essences from plants, which may have a preventative effect, helping to care for common ailments while working alongside medical treatment in the healing process. Essential oils are highly fragrant, volatile and are extracted from flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, roots and fruits of many common plants. The essential oils have many different properties and as research has shown, can be stimulating, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, relaxing, calming, soothing and uplifting. Aromatherapy, therefore, has the ability to affect the emotions, promote bodily well-being and balance psychologically. Aromatherapy is beneficial to most people in most circumstances. Essential oils must be diluted and used with care, preferably under the guidance of a qualified IFPA aromatherapist. When used correctly and by a qualified IFPA aromatherapist, aromatherapy can be effective for a wide client group. Your local aromatherapist will help to advise you on which method and treatment would be best for you.

Visibility is often framed as a skill - something we learn, practice and improve. But for many people, it is first experienced through the body.

Being seen, heard or evaluated can activate the nervous system in ways that feel physical as much as emotional. Tightness in the chest, quicker breathing or a pull to withdraw are not signs of a lack of ability - they are protective responses. Understanding this can shift the approach. Rather than trying to override these sensations, we can support the body in feeling steadier as it steps forward.

This diffuser blend is designed with that in mind. Bergamot helps ease emotional tension and creates a sense of lightness, Black Pepper brings gentle warmth and forward movement, and Frankincense supports grounding through the breath.

Used before moments of visibility, it can help create a more regulated starting point - where presence feels more accessible, and the body is better able to support what you already know.

Learning and professional development place demands on both the mind and the nervous system.

Periods of study, training or expansion often require sustained focus, information processing and emotional resilience - which can lead to mental fatigue or tension if not supported.

Aromatherapy can help create a more balanced internal state, where concentration is supported without tipping into overstimulation. This blend combines Lemon to refresh clarity and attention, Lavender to soften tension and support emotional steadiness, and Frankincense to anchor the breath and maintain focus.

Used before or during study sessions, it can help create a more regulated learning environment - where focus feels sustainable rather than forced.

Clarity often comes before confidence.

When the mind feels overloaded - holding multiple decisions, ideas or expectations - it can be difficult to move forward, even when the next step is known. Supporting clarity is often about creating space, not adding more pressure. Aromatherapy can help shift this state by gently refreshing perception while grounding the nervous system, allowing focus to feel more accessible.

This blend combines Lemon for mental brightness, Rosemary cineole for focus and alertness, and Frankincense to steady the breath and anchor attention. Used during planning, study or focused work, it can help create a clearer internal environment - where confident action becomes easier to access.

Whether it’s speaking, presenting, leading or simply stepping into something unfamiliar, the body may respond with increased tension or hesitation. Short sensory rituals can help support these moments by anchoring the nervous system before action.

This ritual supports a shift from anticipation into presence - allowing the body to settle before stepping forward.

Confidence is often framed as something we need to “think our way into.”

But in practice, confidence is experienced through the body - in the way we breathe, speak, hold posture and respond to pressure. When the nervous system feels safe, the body naturally becomes more open, steady and expressive. When it feels threatened, we may notice tension, shallow breathing or self-doubt.

Aromatherapy can support this shift by helping the body move out of contraction and into a more regulated state.

The transition from school to home can be one of the most stimulating moments in a child’s day. After hours of concentration, social interaction and sensory input, the nervous system often needs time to settle before moving into the calmer rhythm of the evening.

Simple rituals can help support this shift. This gentle topical blend combines Lavender, known for its calming and soothing qualities, with Frankincense, which supports grounding and steady breathing.

Applied lightly to the shoulders or upper back, it can help signal to the body that the busy part of the day is complete - creating space for rest, connection and a more relaxed evening routine.

Within family life, small sensory cues often shape the rhythm of the day more than we realise. Over time, certain scents can become gently linked with particular moments - the quiet of the evening routine, settling children before sleep, or creating a calmer atmosphere during busy mornings.

When the same aromas are used consistently, the brain begins to recognise them as signals. The nervous system starts to associate that scent with a shift in state - from activity to rest, or from stimulation to calm.

In this way, aromatherapy can move beyond occasional use and become part of a family’s everyday rhythm, helping create familiar moments of comfort, routine and emotional ease.

When introduced thoughtfully and safely, aromatherapy can offer young people simple ways to understand and respond to their emotions.

Scent has a unique ability to influence how we breathe, how our body feels, and how quickly the nervous system can return to a state of calm. Over time, small rituals - such as using a personal roller blend or pausing to inhale a familiar aroma - can become reliable cues for regulation and reassurance.

In this way, aromatherapy moves beyond being just a treatment used occasionally, and instead becomes a gentle, practical tool that young people can return to whenever they need a moment of grounding or emotional balance.

When children feel overwhelmed, they often express it through behaviour rather than language. Restlessness, frustration or withdrawal can sometimes be signs that the nervous system is struggling to process too much stimulation.

Aromatherapy can gently support these moments by helping create a calmer sensory environment. Rather than adding more input, carefully chosen scents can soften the atmosphere of a space and encourage the body to settle.

Blends such as Lavender and Cedarwood work well in these situations - Lavender supporting relaxation of the nervous system, while Cedarwood provides a sense of grounding and steadiness. Used mindfully in a diffuser, they can help create a quieter environment where children have space to regulate and return to calm.

Children’s ability to regulate their emotions is still developing, which means their responses to stress, change, or overwhelm can often appear quickly and physically. What we see as behaviour is often the nervous system trying to process more stimulation than it can comfortably manage.

Aromatherapy can support these moments by helping create a sensory environment that feels safe and calming. Rather than attempting to “control” behaviour, the aim is to gently support the body’s natural ability to settle.

Blends such as Lavender and Sweet Orange work well in these situations - Lavender helps to calm the nervous system, while Sweet Orange brings warmth and reassurance to the atmosphere of a space. When used consistently, familiar scents can become subtle cues that signal safety, helping children recognise when it is time to slow down and return to a calmer state.
