Excellence in Aromatherapy

The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists is one of the largest professional aromatherapy practitioner organisations in the world and is a strong, respected voice in the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Its inception in 2002, an amalgamation of the International Society of Professional Aromatherapists and the Register of Qualified Aromatherapist, was the result of a vision by the UK's major international professional aromatherapy organisations to become the best they could. The IFPA is a registered charity with clear, defined aims and objectives and is supported through its membership in the UK and worldwide. The IFPA believes wholeheartedly in the principles and philosophies of holistic health, health care and the promotion of well-being for the individual. These principles and beliefs are the foundations of the IFPA's aims and objectives for its members together with its strong codes of ethics and practice. About Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils by different methods to enhance the well-being of the mind, body and spirit. It uses pure essences from plants, which may have a preventative effect, helping to care for common ailments while working alongside medical treatment in the healing process. Essential oils are highly fragrant, volatile and are extracted from flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, roots and fruits of many common plants. The essential oils have many different properties and as research has shown, can be stimulating, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, relaxing, calming, soothing and uplifting. Aromatherapy, therefore, has the ability to affect the emotions, promote bodily well-being and balance psychologically. Aromatherapy is beneficial to most people in most circumstances. Essential oils must be diluted and used with care, preferably under the guidance of a qualified IFPA aromatherapist. When used correctly and by a qualified IFPA aromatherapist, aromatherapy can be effective for a wide client group. Your local aromatherapist will help to advise you on which method and treatment would be best for you.

We are delighted to celebrate the incredible work of the Fondation Gattefossé, an organisation dedicated to advancing clinical aromatherapy and supporting research into the therapeutic benefits of essential oils in healthcare.

Congratulations to Reiko Sato, a Japanese aromatherapist and pharmacist awarded the 2025 International René-Maurice Gattefossé Prize for her pioneering work in aromatherapy in geriatric care.

For over 20 years, Reiko has successfully integrated aromatherapy into hospital settings, developing safe, effective protocols that support elderly patients with symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, skin conditions, and discomfort, while enhancing overall wellbeing and quality of care.

Her work is a powerful example of how clinical aromatherapy can play a meaningful role in modern, integrative healthcare.

👏 Congratulations to Reiko Sato on this well-deserved recognition!

Mental clutter often mirrors physical stagnation.

This diffuser blend combines citrus oils traditionally associated with clarity and uplift, grounded by Frankincense to prevent overstimulation. It’s particularly supportive during periods of mental overwhelm or decision fatigue.

Diffuse during tidying, planning, or moments when your thoughts feel scattered.

Our environments communicate directly with the nervous system. Fresh scents, clean surfaces and improved air quality can subtly signal safety, clarity and renewal - which is why spring cleaning often feels emotionally satisfying, not just practical.

This blend supports freshness while avoiding synthetic fragrance overload.

Let us know how you feel when using this blend in your home environment!

Seasonal fatigue often shows up not as tiredness, but as resistance - a feeling of being slow to start, mentally foggy, or unmotivated.

This topical blend supports gentle activation through scent and touch, pairing citrus oils traditionally associated with clarity and uplift, with grounding application to help energy return without overstimulation.

Use this ritual as a bridge between rest and action - not a push, but an invitation.

Phototoxicity note: avoid sun exposure on applied areas for 12 hours when using citrus oils topically.

Spring represents transition, not acceleration.

After months of contraction and inward focus, the body often needs support clearing mental fog, emotional heaviness and physical stagnation before true energy can return.

These oils all gently stimulate without overwhelming - Lemon for clarity, Eucalyptus radiata for breath and circulation, and Grapefruit for emotional lightness.

Sometimes we approach difficult conversations trying to find the right words - rehearsing, analysing, preparing our response. But often, what truly shifts the interaction is not language… it’s regulation.

When the body feels safe, the breath softens.
When the breath softens, the nervous system settles.
And from that place, we can speak with clarity, compassion and steadiness - without over-explaining or bracing ourselves.

This ‘soft strength’ roller ritual is designed to support that internal shift before the conversation begins. Applied to the wrists and paired with a slow exhale, this ritual becomes a quiet cue to the body: you are safe to stay with this moment.

Save this for the conversations you want to enter with steadiness rather than defence, and return to it whenever you need to speak from a regulated place.

Connection isn’t something we perform - it’s something the nervous system experiences. When the body senses safety, breath deepens, muscles soften, and we become more available for real connection. Not because everything is perfect, but because we’re no longer bracing ourselves.

This diffuser blend was created to support that internal shift, helping the body move out of vigilance and into presence.

🌿 Why these oils work together:
• Bergamot brings emotional lightness, easing tightness in the chest that often accompanies anticipatory stress.
• Geranium supports emotional equilibrium, especially during relational strain or heightened sensitivity.
• Frankincense anchors the breath and supports grounding, making it easier to stay centred when emotions are active.

Diffusing this blend before moments of connection invites a quieter nervous system - one that can listen, respond and stay open without becoming overwhelmed.
Save this for the gatherings, conversations or sessions where you want to show up with softness and stability.

We often think boundaries are something we “decide.” But the body experiences boundaries as something we feel - a sense of steadiness, safety, and self-containment.

When the nervous system is dysregulated, boundaries become harder to hold. Not because you’re weak, but because your system is already stretched. This is why sensory practices matter. When you pair a consistent blend with a consistent moment (before sessions, after emotionally heavy conversations), the body begins to learn: “This is the moment I return to myself.”

That learning becomes protection, not rigid, just regulated.

When we support others, we often forget to close the experience inside the body. Your day may move on, but your nervous system may still be holding the emotional tone of the conversation, the session, the care you offered. The result can look like restlessness, irritability, depleted energy, or feeling “wired but tired.”

This diffuser blend supports the transition from “holding space” back into “being in yourself.” Lavender is often used to quiet the stress response. Frankincense supports breath depth and centring. Geranium brings emotional equilibrium - especially when you feel tender, stretched or overstimulated.

Use this ritual as a bridge between caring and recovering and let us know how you get on!

At the end of the day, the body often holds more than the mind realises.

Conversations, responsibilities, emotional exchanges, even when they’ve gone well - can linger in the nervous system, leaving us feeling unsettled, tired or quietly overstimulated.

This end-of-day emotional reset blend is designed to support the transition from holding the day to releasing it.

🌿 Why this blend supports unwinding:
• Lavender encourages the nervous system to soften, supporting rest and emotional settling.
• Geranium brings the emotional body back into balance after a day of relational demand.
• Frankincense supports deeper, slower breathing - helping the body recognise it’s safe to let go.

Diffuse this blend as your evening slows, pairing it with gentle breathwork or a few conscious breaths. Longer exhales, unforced inhales, and permission to arrive back in yourself.

Save this for the evenings when you need to gently close the day — without rushing into rest.

Compassion is not an unlimited resource - it moves through the nervous system before it ever reaches the heart. When we offer care, support, or emotional presence for others over time, the body can remain in a subtle state of alertness. This isn’t a sign of weakness or “caring too much” - it’s the nervous system doing its job, staying attuned to the needs around us.

Compassion fatigue arises when that heightened state has no opportunity to settle. Aromatherapy can help by supporting regulation and emotional containment, rather than asking us to disconnect.

🌿 Why this blend supports emotional resilience:
• Geranium encourages emotional equilibrium, helping the body return to centre when emotions feel pulled in multiple directions.
• Frankincense supports breath regulation and grounding, easing the transition out of heightened awareness.
• Cedarwood offers a stabilising, anchoring quality — often helpful when emotional boundaries feel thin or stretched.

Used topically, this blend becomes a quiet cue to the body: you can care deeply without carrying everything. Apply during moments of emotional demand, or as part of an end-of-day ritual to gently return to yourself.

Self-compassion is a nervous system experience. This blend supports emotional steadiness by engaging the olfactory system while anchoring the body through touch and breath.
