Spring in Chinese Medicine is a natural transition into our Yang energy; we see this in nature with plants and trees beginning to grow and flourish from the hibernation of winter 🍃🌻
As humans we aren’t so different; you may start to feel energetically lighter, more sociable and more creative. If you do feel this, use this energy and go with the flow.

A time to reevaluate your habits and daily routines; if there are things that aren’t serving you or that could be serving you better, this might be a good time to try and switch things up ✨

✨ New Cochrane Review Confirms Acupuncture Helps with Chronic Low Back Pain!

A newly published Cochrane review of reviews has examined non-drug and non-surgical treatments for low back pain. The results? Acupuncture effectively reduces pain and improves function for those with chronic low back pain! 🎯

🔸 Acupuncture is already integrated into mainstream healthcare in several countries:
✅ Statutory regulated in Australia, New Zealand, and Portugal
✅ Covered by healthcare insurance in Germany and New Zealand
✅ Recommended in clinical guidelines when seeking out a PSA registered practitioner (BAcC)

However the study highlights that many clinical trials underestimate the real benefits of acupuncture because they don’t reflect the personalised treatments given by traditional acupuncturists.

⚡ Traditional acupuncture:
✔️ Is a safe intervention when provided by trained professionals
✔️ Can be a long-term solution for pain management

🔍 Looking for a trusted acupuncturist? The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) ensures the highest standards of training, safety, and professional conduct. Find a qualified practitioner near you today!

According to Chinese Medicine these are some of the top tips to incorporate when thinking about what and how you eat:

1. Incorporate more soups, stews and broths.
2. Limiting cold, iced and raw foods.
3. Taking time to sit and eat a meal with family or friends, undistracted by the television or phones.
4. Eat inline with circadian rhythms, giving your digestive system a break in the evening and overnight.
5. Eat seasonally. Often the foods that are grown and harvested naturally in that season are considered more suitable for what body needs at that time of year. Eating this way also gives good variety for your microbiome throughout the year.
6. Whatever you are eating, enjoy it. If you fancy a doughnut don’t feel guilty about it, enjoy it.

Warming foods are easier on your digestive system and a big win. Raw foods are of course nutritionally great, however they can require a lot of energy for our digestive system to break down. Putting more energy into cooking meals means the breakdown prices has already started and therefore requires less energy from your body to digest. For most people incorporating more soups, stews and broths leaves more energy for other bodily functions and therefore healing.

Winter in traditional Chinese medicine is classified as a yin month; it is dark, quiet, a time for rest and reflection and to conserve energy ready for spring.

You may feel like you are naturally hibernating; wrapping up warm and getting out for a little walk in some morning sunlight can really help lift your energy and mood. Warming foods such a soups, stews and broths along with warming drinks such as lovely herbal teas are essential in the winter months.

Tui Na, pronounced Tweenaa, is also known as Chinese medical massage. It can be used alongside acupuncture as part of the Chinese medicine picture.

I may use Tui Na to support musculoskeletal complaints as well as part of your treatment plan for health concerns or medical conditions.
Physically it can help loosen tight muscles, reduce areas of tension or increase blood flow but it can also have a more energetic role helping to bring balance and clear any blockages that may be present.

If you are someone that enjoys massage and you would like to try it during your next treatment please drop me a message and let me know.

A lovely 5* Facebook review from a few years ago. I love looking back on these reviews and seeing the support acupuncture brought to each person often at such a vulnerable time like undergoing fertility treatment.

I love supporting people through fertility treatment; if it is something you are considering embarking on, looking to boost your fertility or regulate your cycle please don’t hesitate to get in touch to see how acupuncture may be able to support you.

What is Moxibustion?

Otherwise know as Moxa, Moxibustion is traditional Chinese Medicine therapy and can often accompany an acupuncture treatment. Moxa involved burning a herb called Mugwort and this can be done in various forms including; on top of a needle, in stick form which can look like a cigar and also straight on the skin. The aim of the treatment is to warm specific acupuncture points or areas of the body to bring additional benefit to the individual.

What can it be used for?

Moxa can be very beneficial where people may be struggling with symptoms that Chinese Medicine practitioner such as myself categorise as ‘cold’ in nature. Typically it is used a lot for fertility to warm the uterus, arthritis and painful joints, encouraging a breech baby to turn, supporting some side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea and generally in people who need warming up. It can be used on specific acupuncture points so depending on your individual symptoms and patterns your practitioner will decide if it will benefit you and if so the best way to use it.

Using it in the treatment room:

When the herb mugwort is lit is smoulders away; there is no flame involved however it does produce a good amount of smoke and has a distinctive but not offensive smell. With proper ventilation this is not a problem, however in modern clinics with smoke alarms in every room many people may now use heat lamps or smokeless moxa as an alternative. Many of my patients love sitting under the heat lamp, especially in the colder months.

Let me know in the comments if you have had Moxa or a heat lamp, if it helped you and whether you enjoyed the lovely warm sensation. Also if you would like to see a clip of Moxa in use please let me know in the comments and I will post one.
