Happy Friday 13th ✨
Friday - the day of original sin where Eve stole the forbidden fruit, the day Jesus is said to have died, the day of public hangings in times past.
13 - the number of steps on a gallows, the number of coils of rope in a hangman's noose, Judas Iscariot as the 13th guest at The Last Supper.
Friday 13th forever designated as a day of portent and doom ☠️
However…
There was a time in history before the rise of patriarchy where both Fridays and Thirteen were held in the very highest esteem. Both the day and the number were associated with the Great Goddesses and therefore regarded as sacred; full of luck and good fortune 💰
Thirteen was auspicious for the ancient Egyptians, who believed that life has 13 stages, the last of which is death; the transition to eternal life. Jews around the world still begin the observance of the Sabbath at sunset on Friday evenings. Friday is a day of communal prayer in the Islamic world. Friday is sacred to Freya, the Norse Goddess of love, fertility and creativity.
Thirteen is certainly representative of the Divine feminine, a female number - the average number of menstrual cycles in a year. The approximate number too of annual cycles of the moon 🌙
Historically, 13 also symbolized good fortune in France, a "baker's dozen" provides us with a lucky 13th loaf. Thirteen is the number of blood, fertility, and lunar potency. To turn 13 marks the beginning of your teenage years; growth, life, learning.
The 13th Tarot card is Death, which rarely signifies literal death, but actually represents profound transformation, the end of a major life cycle and essential transition. It symbolises letting go of the old to make way for new beginnings, similar to a snake shedding its skin 🐍 coincidence? I think not.
So today, we celebrate Friday 13th and use it as the count down marker to the last week of Winter before Spring 🌸 (Ostara if you’re a Pagan like me) brings us renewal, new beginnings and the return of light 💡
