❄️Winter through the old system of humoral medicine❄️
Before modern medicine, health was understood through balance. Hippocrates and later Galen described the body through four humours: blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm.
Each season influenced the humours.
Winter was linked with phlegm. Cold. Damp. Slow. Inward.
At this time of year the body naturally
• Slows digestion
• Holds more moisture
• Conserves energy
• Pulls inward rather than outward
Plants show us this clearly. In winter their energy drops into the roots. Growth pauses. Storage and repair happen quietly.
When we try to live at summer pace through winter, imbalance appears. Fatigue. Restless sleep. Congestion. Low mood. Ongoing tension.
Seasonal support aims to work with the body, not against it. This can include:
❄️Regular light exposure early in the day
❄️Gentle movement
❄️Nervous system support
❄️Digestive and nutritional support
❄️Therapeutic massage to support circulation and nervous system dysregulation
❄️Herbal teas and medicines to gently warm digestion and support rest
Winter is not a time to push. It is a time to root.
