Iām a certified clinical reflexologist and have been working as a childrenās nurse since 1994.
Reflexology is an ancient therapy that was first identified by inscriptions on the walls of an Egyptian tomb dating back to 2500BC. Modern reflexology was introduced in the UK by āThe Mother of Reflexologyā Eunice Ingham, who dedicated her life to reflexology because she witnessed first-hand the amazing benefits that the treatments offered.
Reflexology is a non-invasive complimentary therapy based on the principle that the feet, hands and ears have a number of reflexes that each correspond to a specific part of the body. The application of pressure and gentle manipulation to stimulate the reflex points helps to revitalise and restore the bodyās natural state of equilibrium.
Itās a powerful treatment that can be hugely beneficial both physically and emotionally. Reflexology can induce a wonderful feeling of deep relaxation and stress relief. It can help alleviate symptoms experienced by acute and chronic conditions, improve mental alertness, and enhance your sense of well-being.
After a session of reflexology, you may notice that you feel more relaxed, that body tension eases and you experience improved sleep, better mood, increased energy levels, and a general sense of improved wellbeing.
An appropriately trained Reflexologist will not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking conventional medicine, but to complement and work alongside it
My nursing background has predominantly been paediatric oncology, ward based and community based as a Childrenās Macmillan Nurse. I have recently spent time working with children and young people in the school setting, helping to support them with a number of health concerns, particularly those suffering with anxiety and sleep disorders.
As a practicing nurse and mum, Iām aware of how hectic and sometimes stressful life can be, which is why I decided to train as a reflexologist. I have personally experienced the positive benefits of reflexology and know how powerful the effects have been for me and the people Iāve treated. I am amazed by what can be identified through the feet and how much it can help by reducing stress and anxiety as well as providing an increased sense of well-being. My clients often describe feeling ālighterā when they leave.
Iām a passionate believer in positive mental health and mindfulness. Historically, there has often been a clear distinction made between āmindā and ābodyā. When considering mental health and physical health, it is essential to recognise both as being wholly interconnected. Poor physical health can have a detrimental effect on mental health as much as poor mental health can have a negative impact on physical health, which can ultimately lead to an increased risk of many conditions
Reflexology is a holistic therapy and so is unique to each individual experience. It is very helpful as a relaxation therapy but can be beneficial in alleviating symptoms associated with:
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Stress, anxiety, headaches, migraine, insomnia, depression
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Asthma, hay fever, sinusitis
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
IBS, constipation, diverticulitis
HORMONAL IMBALANCES
Endometriosis, menopause, PMS, prostate, thyroid, fibroids, polycystic ovaries, menstrual disorders, fertility or pregnancy.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Asthma, hay fever, sinusitis
OTHERS
Rheumatoid Arthritis, tinnitus, diabetes, cystitis
This is not an exhaustive list of conditions that reflexology can help with.
Gentle foot and hand reflexology may be particularly appropriate for the more fragile client, such as those who are suffering emotionally, convalescing, rehabilitating or receiving palliative or end of life care.
No-one is too young or too old for reflexology. It is suitable for all ages. Anyone and everyone can benefit.
For babies and younger children, it may help with issues concerning feeding and digestion, calming, sleeping, teething and bonding. (Please see my separate Tiny Toes Reflexology and Baby Massage Leicestershire page for more info).
For school aged children and young people, reflexology can be really helpful in combating generalised anxiety, sleep issues, exam related stress, physical and emotional conditions. It also offers a way for parents/carers to help their children naturally.
Some people enjoy reflexology purely as a relaxing and preventative treatment, using it to maintain their health, manage stress and generally improve their sense of well-being. Others come for a specific reason such as an acute or chronic physical or emotional health condition.
Our feet bear the full weight of our body and invariably, they are the most neglected.
Regular reflexology helps promote positive mental and physical health and if nothing more, it will indulge you in an uplifting yet deeply relaxing experience.
