👣 **Understanding Hammer Toes: What You Need to Know** 👣

Ever heard of hammer toes? It's a common foot condition that can cause discomfort and impact your daily life. Here's a quick guide to help you understand and manage it:

🔍 **What Are Hammer Toes?**
Hammer toes occur when the middle joint of a toe becomes bent, causing the toe to look like a hammer. This condition often affects the second, third, or fourth toes.

⚠️ **Causes:**
- **Footwear**: Tight or high-heeled shoes can force your toes into a bent position.
- **Injury**: Trauma to the toe can lead to hammer toes.
- **Genetics**: Sometimes, it runs in families.
- **Health Conditions**: Arthritis, diabetes, and other conditions can contribute.

🩺 **Symptoms:**
- Pain or irritation in the affected toe
- Corns or calluses on top of the joint
- Redness, swelling, or a burning sensation
- Inability to straighten the toe

💡 **Treatment and Prevention:**
- **Proper Footwear**: Choose shoes with a wide toe box and low heels.
- **Orthotic Devices**: Custom insoles can help align your toes correctly.
- **Exercises**: Toe stretches and exercises can improve flexibility.
- **Medical Treatment**: In severe cases, surgery might be necessary.

Taking care of your feet is crucial for overall health and mobility. If you suspect you have hammer toes, consult a footcare professional for personalised advice and treatment options.

Stay informed and keep your feet happy! 🦶❤️

🏊‍♂️🌴 *Avoid Cramps While Swimming on Holiday!*

Some of us may be heading off to (hopefully) warmer climates this summer. Don't let cramps spoil your fun in the water! Here are some quick tips to keep you swimming smoothly:

1. *Stay Hydrated*: Drink plenty of water before and after swimming.
2. *Warm Up*: Stretch your muscles with a light warm-up before diving in.
3. *Balance Your Diet*: Ensure you’re getting enough electrolytes like potassium and magnesium.
4. *Pace Yourself*: Avoid overexertion and take breaks when needed.
5. *Stay Warm*: If the water is cold, ease in gradually to help your muscles adjust.

Enjoy your swim without the discomfort! 🏖️🌊

🦶🚫 *Prevent Fungal Nail Infections!*

Keep your nails healthy and fungus-free this summer with these easy tips:

1. *Keep Feet Dry*: Dry thoroughly after washing, especially between toes.
2. *Trim Nails Properly*: Cut straight across and keep them short.
3. *Wear Breathable Shoes*: Opt for footwear that allows air circulation.
4. *Change Socks Daily*: Use clean, dry socks every day.
5. *Avoid Barefoot in Public*: Wear flip-flops in communal showers and pool areas.

Left unchecked fungal nail can spread into all nails and even fingernails. So prevention is definitely better than the cure in this case, as it can be extremely stubborn to get rid of the infection once it takes hold.

Fungal nail is NO FUN!! 🤣🤦‍♀️

🌟 **What You Need to Know About Verrucas** 🌟

Verrucas, also known as plantar warts, are a common foot issue that can be both annoying and painful. Here’s a quick guide to understanding and managing verrucas:

🔍 **What Are Verrucas?**
Verrucas are warts that appear on the soles of your feet, often caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can look like small, rough, cauliflower-like bumps and may have tiny black dots in the center.

⚠️ **Causes:**
- **HPV Infection**: Verrucas are caused by HPV, which can enter the skin through tiny cuts or abrasions.
- **Wet Environments**: Public swimming pools and showers are common places to pick up the virus.
- **Direct Contact**: Touching or coming into contact with an infected surface can spread the virus.

🩺 **Symptoms:**
- A rough, grainy growth on the bottom of your foot
- Pain or tenderness when walking or standing
- A cluster of warts in one area (mosaic warts)

💡 **Treatment and Prevention:**
- **Over-the-Counter Remedies**: Salicylic acid treatments can help remove verrucas.
- **Cryotherapy**: Freezing the wart off with liquid nitrogen is an option.
- **Prescription Treatments**: A doctor can provide stronger treatments if OTC options don’t work.
- **Good Hygiene**: Keep your feet clean and dry, and avoid walking barefoot in public places.
- **Avoid Direct Contact**: Don’t touch or scratch verrucas to prevent spreading the virus.

Verrucas can be stubborn, but with the right care and precautions, you can manage and prevent them. If you're struggling with a persistent verruca, consult a footcare professional for the best treatment options.

Have you heard of chilblains but not sure what they are? In this really cold weather we’ve been having, I’m hearing about chilblains occurring quite a lot, so here’s the low down on them and what to look out for!

🥶Chilblains are small, red itchy patches or bumps that can swell and blister
🥶 They occur as a result of repeated exposure to cold air and is the inflammation of the small blood vessels
🥶 They usually occur on the extremities, like hands and feet, but can also present on legs and face
🥶 They usually clear up on their own within 2 to 3 weeks 🥶 Make sure you wear warm, waterproof clothing if you go out when it’s cold and damp 🥶 Take ibuprofen or paracetamol to ease the pain if you have them 🥶 Do not run your hands or feet under warm water or place them on a radiator to warm them up. This can cause the blood to ‘rush’ causing even more pain and swelling. 🥶Seek medical attention if they do not clear up, you have a raised temperature, or if you have diabetes.

❤️👣A lot of my footcare appointments are arranged by relatives for their loved ones. Sometimes it can be because they can no longer reach their feet, sometimes it’s because they have challenges with their feet that need special attention, or sometimes it’s simply because a foot care treatment makes them feel better. ❤️👣Whatever the reason, every patient I see is treated with care and attention. A lot of my regulars are now my friends. ❤️ 👣If you know a relative or loved one who you think needs or would appreciate a foot care treatment in their own home, I’d love to hear from you.

Our Story

My journey into foot care started in 2011 when I decided to reinvent myself and become self employed having worked and managed in estate agency sales for 12 years. It’s not an obvious route I know, but I knew I liked helping people and I have always had jobs that centred around customer services (Barclays Bank and Thomson Holidays when I was younger!).

I wanted to find a profession that would promote well being and have a direct benefit to those I treated. So I retrained to become a Foot Health Practitioner and have never looked back since. It’s a win win for me because I love the interaction of conversation with my clients and they value me giving them the time and attention they deserve!

I love being able to make my clients feet more comfortable and healthy. From looking after your toenails to removing hard skin and corns, you will feel immediate benefit from my visit. Please get in touch if you want to know more.
