Accessibility doesn’t have to look clinical!

For this Stourbridge home, Multicare designed and installed a colour-matched Guldmann GH3 ceiling hoist system within a purpose-built home cinema for a young person with complex mobility needs.

The brief was clear:
✔ Full room coverage and safe transfers
✔ A calm, non-clinical environment
✔ Equipment that blended into a dark, design-led space

By colour-matching both the track and hoist motor, the system integrates seamlessly into the room, supporting dignity, independence, and family life without dominating the space.

Delivered end-to-end — from survey and design through to installation and commissioning — this project shows how thoughtful equipment design can enhance, not compromise, a home environment.

With the right vision and support, almost anything is possible.

Hygiene rooms play a vital role in supporting dignity, safety, and independence, but just meeting the required standards doesn’t guarantee they work well in real life.

Layout, circulation space, equipment positioning, hoist coverage, and how carers actually support users day to day all influence whether a hygiene room feels calm and practical, or cramped and stressful.

When hygiene rooms are designed around real routines and not just minimum requirements, they support safer transfers, reduce manual handling risk, and create a better experience for everyone using the space.

At Multicare, we design and install hygiene rooms with day-to-day use in mind, combining compliant layouts, appropriate equipment specification, and practical insight to deliver spaces that genuinely work.

If you’re planning a new hygiene room or reviewing an existing one, our team can help from early design through to installation and ongoing support.

Late design changes are one of the biggest risks in care and accessibility projects.

They often happen when specialist equipment, structure, services, and space requirements haven’t been properly coordinated early on. Ceiling hoists, hygiene room equipment, and Changing Places systems all place specific demands on ceilings, walls, layouts, and MEP services.

When those relationships aren’t reviewed early, issues tend to surface once work is already underway, at which point changes are costly and disruptive.

BIM coordination allows these elements to be considered together, helping teams identify clashes, test clearances, and confirm loadings before designs are locked in. The result is fewer surprises on site, less rework, and a smoother route from design through to installation.

At Multicare, we support BIM-led projects by providing Revit-ready models and technical input for specialist care and accessibility equipment, helping teams de-risk decisions and design spaces that work in practice, not just on paper.

Equipment installation day isn’t the end of a project… it’s the start of everyday use.

In care, education, and healthcare settings, equipment such as ceiling hoists, shower and changing equipment, and hygiene room systems are used daily. How well they continue to perform has a direct impact on the safety, dignity, and confidence of users and caregivers.

Ongoing support means regular servicing, responsive maintenance, and access to people who understand how the system was designed to work in practice.

At Multicare, we stay involved long after installation, helping ensure equipment remains safe, compliant, and reliable for the people who depend on it every day.

Designing specialist care environments means carefully considering and coordinating equipment, structure, services, access, and future use, and how everything will work together within often very tight spaces.

BIM and Revit-ready models allow these elements to be reviewed in one coordinated view and, in specialist environments, help design teams to:

✅ Align ceiling hoists and tracking with structure and load paths

✅ Check clearances for wheelchairs, beds, carers, and transfer routes

✅ Identify clashes early with MEP, lighting, sprinklers, and fire systems

✅ Plan for maintenance access and future adaptability

✅ Sense-check layouts so rooms work in practice, not just on drawings

Seeing these relationships in a shared 3D model means potential issues can be explored and resolved early, before designs are fixed and changes become disruptive.

At Multicare, we provide Revit-ready models and BIM support for ceiling hoists, hygiene room equipment, and Changing Places systems, helping project teams design spaces that are coordinated, buildable, and ready for long-term use.

If you’re working on an accessible design project and need reliable BIM support, we’re here to help.

There are lots of things to consider when planning a classroom hoist system, including:

✅ Track coverage and transfer routes
✅ Space for wheelchairs, equipment, and staff movement
✅ How students move between learning areas, therapy spaces, and hygiene rooms
✅ Ceiling structure and future adaptability

✅ How the room will be used day to day by teachers and support staff
When hoist systems are designed around real teaching, therapy, and care routines – not just minimum compliance – they become part of the learning environment, supporting inclusion rather than restricting it.

At Multicare, we work with schools, local authorities, and consultants to assess spaces, design appropriate layouts, and specify and install ceiling hoist systems that support safe, dignified care and flexible learning environments.

Whether you’re looking for support with a classroom hoist system or school hygiene rooms, our expert team is ready to help.

In care and accessibility projects, problems often start when key building elements aren’t fully understood from the outset, such as ceiling loadings, space constraints, services, future needs, and how equipment will actually be used day to day.

By the time issues show up on site, they’re usually expensive, disruptive, and stressful to fix.

Early site assessment and proper surveying mean these factors are considered before layouts are fixed and equipment is specified. It allows ceiling hoists, adjustable basins, changing benches, hygiene room equipment, and other specialist systems to be designed to work with the building, and not forced into it later.

At Multicare, early technical input helps reduce late design changes, minimise installation risk, and create solutions that work first time.

Getting it right at the start is always easier than fixing it on site – and delivering better healthcare is a teamwork exercise!

When designing ceiling hoist systems for specialist schools, getting the structure, layout, and future needs right from day one is vital.

For Castle School in Cambridge, a complex, multi-room Pre-Formal Reactive Hub needed a fully integrated, future-proof solution. Multicare began with a detailed site survey and early structural assessment, working closely with the school to ensure the building could safely support the proposed system before finalising the design.

The project was highly complex, but the delivered solution included:

✔️ Bespoke multi-room Guldmann GH1 ceiling-track system covering classrooms, communal areas, and hygiene rooms
✔️ Combi-Lock and turntables for seamless room-to-room transfers
✔️ Dual-track operation for multiple transfers and active mobility with standing slings
✔️ Optimised track layout tailored to staff and pupil needs

This entire complex project was delivered on time and within budget.

The result is a flexible, connected learning environment that supports safe moving and handling, dignity, and independence across classrooms, therapy spaces, and hygiene rooms.

Headteacher Charlotte Whysall described the project as transformational, noting that “the design integrated perfectly with the existing structure and offered dual-track operation."

Charlotte also commented that "Multicare demonstrated an excellent understanding of our educational and therapeutic context. They could see our vision for the space and helped us translate it into reality.

The project team were responsive, professional, and knowledgeable throughout. Communication was clear at every stage from site survey and design through to installation and staff training. They worked flexibly around our school schedule, ensuring minimal disruption to pupils and classes.”

Today is Blue Monday, and it's often talked about as the most difficult day of the year for mood and motivation.

For many people, getting out of the house, being around others, and having access to public spaces can make a real difference to wellbeing. That can be anything from visiting a café, a shopping centre, or simply enjoying a day out.

For people with complex disabilities, that freedom depends on more than just ramps and lifts. It depends on having access to fully equipped, well-designed Changing Places toilet facilities that support dignity, comfort, and independence when away from home.

Changing Places toilets play such an important role in inclusivity and accessibility. They enable people and their families to participate in everyday life, visit public venues with confidence, and spend time in places that matter to them.

If you’re involved in designing, specifying, or managing public buildings, the provision of Changing Places facilities can be the difference between a venue being technically accessible and genuinely inclusive.

There are many ceiling hoists on the market, and not all of them are even fixed to the ceiling! Some can be wall-mounted where structure is limited, others are portable, and different systems are designed for very different levels of use.

So it’s no surprise that choosing the right one can feel complex.

Two of the most commonly specified systems we work with are the Guldmann GH1 and GH3 ceiling hoists. And while they may look similar, they’re designed for very different demands.

The GH1 is typically suited to standard care environments and single-room use, where transfers are regular but within typical weight ranges and usage levels. It’s a reliable, compact solution for everyday care in bedrooms, bathrooms, and treatment spaces.

The GH3 is built for more demanding and intensive environments. With a higher lifting capacity and greater durability, it’s often the better choice for bariatric care, therapy spaces, care homes, schools, multi-user areas, and settings where the system will be used frequently throughout the day or needs to support more complex tracking layouts.

At Multicare, we make the decision simple by starting with the needs of the user (or users), how the space is used, the layout and structure of the building, and how transfers will happen day to day.

From there, we can recommend the most appropriate system - whether that’s a GH1, a GH3, or another solution entirely - so the hoist works with the environment, not against it, and then move on to room design with any extras that might be needed, such as gates, turntables, and accessories.

Getting it right first time makes care safer, easier, and far more sustainable.

If you’re planning an upcoming adaptation or need advice on selecting the right ceiling hoist for your client’s needs, our team is always happy to help.

At major public venues such as football stadiums, accessibility isn’t static. As attendance grows and awareness increases, facilities that once met demand can quickly become stretched.

At Anfield, Liverpool FC already had a Changing Places facility in place, but recognised the need to expand provision so more fans with complex disabilities and their carers could be properly supported on matchday. They asked Multicare to work alongside the project team to design and deliver an additional Changing Places room that integrates seamlessly into the existing stadium environment.

From early design through to installation, our team ensured the layout, ceiling hoist coverage, and equipment specification supported safe transfers, good circulation, and ease of use, while working within the constraints of an operational, high-footfall venue.

The finished space provides a fully compliant, dignified, and practical environment that helps more supporters enjoy matchday with confidence and comfort.

Many manual handling problems don’t start with people. They often start with environments.

This can include tight spaces, poor layouts, or ceiling hoist systems that haven’t been properly planned, which can force staff to work around limitations, increasing risk and putting pressure on already stretched teams.

When ceiling hoist systems are properly assessed and designed into the specific space, they become part of the environment, supporting safer, more efficient movement without workarounds.

At Multicare, we look at how equipment will actually be used day in, day out, so that layouts, tracking, and coverage genuinely support safe transfers and help reduce manual handling risk.
