I feel so passionate about the importance of antenatal education in order to prepare women (and their support circle) for what is it to come. Although my antenatal course covers all the breastfeeding basics, being able to provide a two hour one-to-one session means I can cover everything with them in so much more depth, answer all their questions and provide more focused teaching in a way that group parenting classes can’t.

A recent review on my Google Business Account. This was a baby who I met at 3 weeks of age who was still under their birth weight and it was a very complex picture that was contributing to the breastfeeding difficulties. However, with lots of dedication from mum, alongside professional guidance and ongoing support it all ended well. Some breastfeeding challenges are much more complicated than others and sometimes it can take many weeks to get things back on track but it can be done so don’t ever lose hope.

One of my favourite breastfeeding quotes is: “For breastfeeding to work you need someone to turn to who understands how important it is to you, and who believes you can do it” - and that’s why Lactation Consultants can be so important in times of difficultly, not just for practical support, but also to prop you up emotionally and give you back your belief in yourself and your abilities ❤️

Another lovely review has been received today and this baby then went on to have a tongue-tie release shortly after our Consultation. After the procedure the baby was then able to latch to the breast perfectly without needing the shields anymore and with mum continuing to use all the correct positioning and attachment techniques that I’d shown her, breastfeeding really took off. This example demonstrates well how a ni**le shield (when used correctly) can act as a fantastic feeding tool to enable breastfeeding to continue during times of difficulty.

This lovely feedback is from a mum whose baby I saw at 18 days of age due to her daughter still being 300g below her birth weight, and not having gained any weight in almost 2 weeks. We did lots of work on positioning and attachment to improve her baby’s latching and feeding skills, as well as implementing a 3 hourly triple feeding plan (breastfeeding, pumping and then bottle feeding) to boost mum’s milk supply and to enable small amounts of expressed milk to be given after each breastfeed to make sure the baby was getting the additional calories that she needed. Within 3 days the baby had gained 150g of weight and then gained another 120g over the next 3 days too. In less than 3 weeks mum’s pumping volumes had practically doubled, and because her baby was also breastfeeding so much more effectively, and she was consistently gaining weight, it meant she was only needing 4 small bottle top-ups a day, which she is now being weaned off completely. What a wonderful, successful and inspirational story! Triple feeding plans can take their toll both physically and mentally but are sometimes necessary for new babies who just aren’t gaining weight. However, with the right guidance and professional support it certainly doesn’t have to mean the end of exclusive breastfeeding, it’s just a way to get things back on track so that effective and responsive breastfeeding can ultimately be achieved.

Completed my course today: "Fundamentals in tongue-tie awareness and Treatment Considerations."

It was such an informative course and definitely one that will enable me to provide more knowledgeable care to the families where I suspect a tongue-tie may be present.

Those unbearable sleepless nights, the worries about your milk supply, feeding your baby every 1-2 hours, wondering if they’re getting enough milk, worrying if they are gaining enough weight, cluster feeding that lasts 3-5 hours throughout the night, questioning yourself: Is it supposed to hurt? Why are they feeding so much? Am I doing it right? What if I’m starving my baby? Feeling the pressure of your baby’s nourishment all resting on your shoulders, the feeling of being housebound and isolated when things are tough, the engorgement, the pumping, never getting a rest or a break and the absolute mental exhaustion of being on call 24/7. For some women breastfeeding can be really, really tough, both emotionally and physically.

But before you know it, they’re 8 years old and you’re wondering where that time went, whilst also being so thankful that despite all the worries and difficulties you faced, you managed to survive and have the feeding experience you wanted with your baby 🤱

Keep going mums, rest and look after yourself and take all the support that family, friends and the professionals can offer you.
