Funeral celebrant My name is Anna van der Vliet and I am Dutch, having lived in the UK for nearly 30 years.

I understand my last name is a bit difficult to pronounce for English people. 'van der Vliet' means 'of the River Vliet' in English and that is how the name of my business was born. It does not mean that I only conduct funeral ceremonies on water though, funeral ceremonies can be conducted from anywhere. Chapels, crematoria, community centres, back gardens, and on rivers or seas, etc. The dragonfly in the logo depicts a sun setting over a river. It represents freedom, a life coming to an end, a river flowing into the sea.

I always feel compassion and empathy when conducting a funeral ceremony and my own feelings do not come into play, as I'm completely there for the family. But today was different. The beautiful pictures of a beautiful family life, the words to the music, the tears from the people attending, it reminded me of my own heartache and loss. Us humans are so transitory, our lives come and go. I met my late husband 30 years ago this bank holiday weekend and we had a beautiful family life until he decided to go and leave us. All these memories, I always say, they are forever ours, but sometimes they feel bittersweet. Our time with any of our loved ones is always final.

I have now done more than 30 funerals and still think this is the best job ever. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to support the families with their goodbyes.

Merry Christmas everyone. I am blessed with my three beautiful granddaughters. However, I wish their grandad was still here to enjoy Christmas with us. At times like this I miss him even more...
