Could you use your time to make a difference?

Tilehouse Counselling is a registered charity which provides subsidised, professional counselling for adults and young people (13+), in and around Hitchin.

Our aim is to make counselling available to every single person who wants to access it, offering compassionate and confidential therapy in a safe space. We believe mental health support should be accessible to everyone.

We have an amazing team of counsellors, as well as a valuable team of volunteers that keep our service running smoothly - and now we're looking to add to that team.

Could you be our new colleague?

We're looking for Reception Cover to join our team on Thursday evenings, letting people into the building to access their counselling sessions, taking phone calls and providing directions if needed.

This volunteering position would suit someone calm and professional, who understands the importance of discretion and confidentiality. Because you'll be sat behind a quiet reception desk, you'll have the option to bring along a book, knitting - or any other quiet activity you like(!) - to do while you help coordinate the evening's sessions.

We're looking for someone for 8 weeks from 23rd April, however, if you wanted to stay on with us longer than that (because you'll probably really love it here!), then there is the option to do so, too.

If you can spare a few hours on a Thursday evening to allow us to continue offering counselling services to those who need it, and you think you've got the calm manner we're looking for, we'd love to hear from you.

We look forward to hearing from you!💜

(Please note that this opportunity is only open to those over the age of 18 due to safeguarding.)

The good news just keeps coming!

We're so grateful to have been award £900 by Stevenage Community Trust, allowing us to replace old IT equipment and keep our service running smoothly for our clients.

Reliable tech means effective back office systems, meaning that our team can focus on what matters the most: providing seamless and affordable counselling services to as many people as possible.

Thank you so much to Stevenage Community Trust (and especially their Ambassador, Sarah Free, who presented us with this lovely big cheque)!💜🥳

Everyone here at Tilehouse Counselling would like to extend a MASSIVE thanks to John Self and the whole team at Rainsford Contracts for kindly donating new carpets and vinyl for us!

Not only did they remove the old ones and dispose of them, they sourced and supplied the new ones, fitted them around our incredibly busy schedule and left our counselling rooms and other spaces looking brand new.

This huge donation makes such a difference to the comfort of those who are using our spaces - and is something that isn't funded through our usual grant and funding routes.

Companies like Rainsford Contracts show exactly what it means to have a positive social impact through tangible and meaningful contributions to small charities like ours.

Thanks once again, John and team. You are truly wonderful and have made such a difference to the experience that people will have when they use our services.

Look at our fancy new floors!🥳

📣BIG TILEHOUSE NEWS!

We are so excited to announce two new appointments in key roles here at Tilehouse Counselling, effective from 1st April.

First up, Becky Ireland will be officially stepping into her new role as CEO. Becky joined Tilehouse as Operations Manager in June 2023, bringing a wealth of experience gained through a variety of welfare posts for large and small organisations. She joined Tilehouse Counselling at a time of some upheaval following the departure of the charity’s Founder for health reasons.

As Operations Manager, Becky soon impressed trustees and staff alike with her solid organisational skills and attention to detail, making significant progress to upgrade systems and processes in line with contemporary practice. She brought much needed stability to the operations and clinical delivery of counselling services and secured a substantial multi year funding bid via The National Lottery.

In the past couple of years, financial stability has been a struggle for many small and large charities. After a significant deficit in 2024/5, Trustees hired an interim ceo to assess the sustainability of Tilehouse and - whilst it was feared at first that charity might have over stretched itself - a plan soon emerged. This plan, whilst difficult, has meant that jobs have been saved (albeit sadly three voluntary redundancies have been necessary).

Following a revitalisation of the Tilehouse Board of Trustees, a new organisational strategy and renewed fundraising efforts, Becky has emerged as the obvious choice to lead the charity through the next phase of delivering long term, accredited counselling services across north Hertfordshire. Becky leads a team of 6 counsellors, two office support team members and several volunteers.

Next up, Meg Taylor will be taking on the role of Chair of Trustees.

Tilehouse’s ethos immediately resonated with Meg, who has first-hand experience of the transformative impact that accessible, compassionate counselling can have. Having navigated anxiety and depression personally, Meg understands how vital it is for people to feel heard, understood, and supported. Becoming a trustee provides Meg with an opportunity to give back, support a service she truly believes in, and help ensure that counselling remains accessible to those who need it most.

Meg brings a combination of strategic thinking, compassion-led leadership and strong governance awareness to the board. Her professional background includes mentoring, facilitation and guiding individuals and organisations through change, wellbeing challenges and personal development.

Meg has over 20 years’ experience as a Property Management Surveyor, having held senior leadership positions including Director and Line Manager. Her career has encompassed governance, risk management, strategic planning, budgeting and people leadership - all directly relevant to supporting a charity at board level.

Meg's work in wellbeing, mental health and inclusion has reinforced the importance of compassion, psychological safety and ethical boundaries. This combination of professional leadership experience and wellbeing-focused practice enables Meg to support Tilehouse Counselling in a way that balances robust governance with genuine care for the people it serves.

Please join us in congratulating both Becky and Meg - and in welcoming Meg to the team!🥳👏

We actually have some unexpected spaces available at the moment for 13-18 year olds mainly, who may benefit from counselling. You don’t need a GP referral. We’re a small local charity, so parents will be asked to make a weekly voluntary donation according to your means, but your child doesn’t need to struggle alone. And nor do you.
Book an initial chat this week to see if counselling is right for your young person.
